The activity was organised by the Mijas AECC with the aim of raising awareness

In 2023, around 43,000 new cases of colon cancer were detected in Spain, which is why on the occasion of its world day, which is commemorated every 31st of March, the Spanish Association Against Cancer held the traditional walk 'Mijas, on the move against cancer' on the morning of Sunday 17th of March. The aim of this activity is to raise awareness of the importance of carrying out tests for the prevention of this disease and to continue research into it.

On a sunny, almost spring morning, many people took part in this initiative which began on the Branch Office Square in La Cala with a zumba class and continued with a walk along the Coastal Path until arriving at Riviera. With the slogan 'Move your bum', young and old showed their support for this association. According to the president of the Mijas branch of the association, Lola Sanchís, "with this slogan we are trying to make everyone aware so that they can get tested for this disease, which is very simple, just a stool sample, and in this way avoid many problems in the future". It is a silent disease, but with early detection, 9 out of 10 people survive. The goal is that by 2030 70% of cancers will be curable. "We have to get off our bums and there's no better way to do it than along the coastal path we have, which is very beautiful", said one of the participants, Goyi García.

With many participants and volunteers doing their bit during the day, the event was a great success. Some of them, such as Marcos Morales, explained that "you have to support, you have to come and you have to be there, which is the important thing, because you never know who might get their turn". One of the volunteers, Mariló Alarcón, added that "above all we must raise awareness among young people because this concerns us all and we have to take part".

Institutional support
This initiative was also supported by members of the government team. Councillor Silvia Marín (PP) stated that "we are here to collaborate because what family hasn't gone through this situation, and as there are associations like this one that can help both patients and their families, we obviously have to be there and support them". For his part, Vox Mijas councillor Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson insisted on putting pressure on the governments, both regional and central, to make adequate investments, he said, in R&D departments, "it is very important, above all, to the central government, as we see that they spend millions on other causes and yet, for cancer patients, we have seen in the news recently that they have not wanted to accept medicines, for example, for breast cancer, because they were too expensive". On the other hand, the councillor for Por Mi Pueblo, Juan Carlos Maldonado, asserted that "it is a disease that represents a scourge in our society and this association, and all the groups that fight for these causes, must have the support of society and the Town Hall". The money raised during the day will go towards research into the disease.
