The mayoress of Mijas and councillor for Family and Equal Opportunities, Ana Mata (PP), announced on Thursday 29th the names of the people who will be recognised this year on International Women’s Day.

Those chosen to be awardees are Anne Bowles, Marta Ortega, Remedios Fernández, Berni Gabriel, Rafi Cuevas and Celia Salguero.

As Mata explained, these are indispensable women for Mijas, as Remedios Fernández, Berni Gabriel and Rafi Cuevas have been chosen for their educational work for more than 30 years at the ‘UP’ and for preserving the culture and traditions so that continue to be maintained from generation to generation. as they carry out outstanding social work, undertaking tasks that help to promote culture, sport, traditions and helping people who are in vulnerable situations.

“The 8th of March is a day on which women make it clear that there is still a long way to go, something that we at the Town Hall are working on across the board. That is why, as part of this commemoration, we will once again celebrate the ‘Gala Mijas en Femenino’, now in its sixteenth year, and with which we want to thank these women who are essential to our municipality”, said Mata.

Awardees

In this regard, the mayoress informed that Anne Bowles will be honoured for her continuous work helping diabetics, and Marta Ortega for being the captain of CB Unicaja Mijas, “as she and her teammates carry the name of our municipality wherever they go and are an example of effort and dedication”.

Finally, Ana Mata indicated that Celia Salguero, another of the awardees, has a long career in the field of volunteering. The six women will receive their awards at the ‘Mujeres sin +’ gala, which will take place on the 8th of March at the Manuel España Municipal Theatre in Las Lagunas.
