The delegate of the Andalusian Government, Patricia Navarro, has made an institutional visit to Mijas today, where she announced that the Andalusian Regional Government and the Mijas Town Hall will promote new health infrastructure in the municipality that will innovate in processes and care services.  

Patricia Navarro held a meeting with the new mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), and the new municipal government team, in which they discussed the main lines of joint work to be carried out by the two institutions. This is the first institutional visit by an Administration to the Town Hall since the current municipal government team has been in place.

In this context, the delegate of the Andalusian Government announced that the Junta and the Town Hall will work together to provide the municipality with new advanced medical health infrastructure, which will include primary care, specialised consultations and emergency services. 

"It will be a new state-of-the-art health facility, not only in terms of the range of services, which will be extended, but will also provide more efficiency in the provision of services, as those currently offered in different infrastructures will be reorganised and the health processes provided will be improved", explained the delegate, who detailed that the idea is to have a health space that allows the patient a single procedure, in other words, that "if you enter with an emergency you can leave already diagnosed and with treatment".

Navarro pointed out that Mijas is one of the municipalities in the province of Malaga that has seen the greatest population growth in recent years, without the previous Andalusian governments providing an adequate response to this growth in areas such as education and health, which has led to a shortage of educational places and health services. Mata thanked the Junta de Andalucía for its willingness to collaborate with the Mijas Town Hall "in this new phase which must serve to position Mijas in its rightful place, as the third largest municipality in the province. Institutional collaboration is essential and it is fundamental that relations between administrations are fostered in order to implement the projects that Mijas needs". 

In this regard, Navarro has assured that "Mijas is going to be the priority on the health policy agenda of the Andalusian Government in the province of Malaga. We are aware that this growth in population has compromised the quality of healthcare and we are going to work to continue improving the healthcare situation in Mijas". 

The delegate recalled that since 2019 the current Regional Government has made a "significant investment effort" to resolve these deficits, highlighting the new 061 healthcare base with medical, nursing and emergency health technician staff and the expansion of the Las Lagunas Health Centre and the La Cala surgery, which involved the opening of two more consulting rooms.  

She also highlighted the increase of 50 health professionals in Mijas since the arrival of the current Andalusian government. Thus, she explains, in Primary Emergency Services (SUAP) the number of doctors and nurses has increased from 15 doctors and 16 nurses in 2018 to 23 doctors and 22 nurses by the end of 2022.

Education 

On the subject of education, Navarro also recalled that Mijas had a significant deficit of educational places, as "the previous regional governments did not want to take up the gauntlet to give a committed response" to the population growth of the municipality and the need for new spaces. 

On the contrary, they emphasise from the Junta, "the current government of Juanma Moreno has a firm commitment to education, and, in fact, Mijas is one of the Malaga cities in which more has been invested in education since 2019, with 21.5 million euros in 17 building, expansion and adaptation interventions in educational centres, of which 7.5 million will be executed by the end of 2023". 

Work is currently underway on the new Las Lagunas secondary school, which is expected to cover a large part of the demand for places. It is an educational infrastructure with six lines for 720 secondary school places.

She also highlighted that the project to expand the IES de La Cala de Mijas secondary school, which will involve an investment of 4.5 million euros and which will go from having 2 lines of ESO and 2 of Bachillerato to 5 lines in each of these areas, is in the process of being processed. 

"When in a single infrastructure project you have to go from 2 to 5 lines, it is a sign that in this municipality things have not been done well," said Navarro, who assured that "our government is determined to correct this unfair debt that the autonomous community maintained with Mijas". 

She also mentioned that there is already an approved project for the extension of the Jardín Botánico School, with 1.85 million euros, and that work is going to be done on the implementation of the 'in situ' kitchen in this same centre and in the Indira Gandhi Primary School.

We could also have made progress," said Navarro, "on a new secondary school and a new school in La Cala, but this has not been done because of problems with the previous municipal government, who backed out of the transfer of a plot of land, and now we will look for a new one, because it is a fundamental project to meet the demand that the municipality is going to face. 

Drought and restoration of the Sierra de Mijas

During the meeting with the mayoress of Mijas, the Andalusian Government's response to the current drought and the restoration work following last year's fire in the Sierra Mijas were also discussed. 

On the former, Navarro pointed out that the Regional Government is working on the so-called Autovía del Agua (Water Highway) with the connection of the Campo de Gibraltar with the Costa del Sol to guarantee the water supply on the coast of Malaga.  

Finally, she pointed out that work is continuing on the regeneration and reforestation plan following the fire in the Sierra de Mijas, which also damaged part of the municipalities of Alhaurín el Grande and Alhaurín de la Torre, indicating that 1.5 million euros have been earmarked for these projects for 2023. 

In terms of sustainability, Navarro also announced that there are plans for conservation and regeneration of underwater ecosystems in Calahonda, with an investment of 300,000 euros.
