Work begins on the Los Santos car park, to provide 235 new parking spaces in Las Lagunas

  • The project has a completion period of 18 months and an investment of 15.7 million euros

A large-scale mine construction system will be used, as the age of the neighbourhood requires this type of building technique

The mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the first deputy mayor and councillor for Infrastructures, José Carlos Martín (Cs), attended the start of work on the new car park in Los Santos, in Las Lagunas. The works started on Wednesday on the Mijas square and in January they will continue in a second phase on the La Cala square. "We are responding to a historical demand from many residents of this neighbourhood of Los Santos who are not lucky enough to have a garage or a private parking space and who have real problems every day when it comes to parking their vehicles in this area of Las Lagunas", says the mayor.

In this regard, the mayor recalls that the neighbourhood of Los Santos "was designed in the 60s, 70s, 80s, with mostly self-built houses, on narrow streets, and today it has become a very central area of Las Lagunas, receiving numerous people who park in this neighbourhood every day to carry out different activities. It should not be forgotten that in addition to the local businesses, the health centre and the Cultural Centre are also within walking distance", adding that "it will take 18 months of work, but when completed, these works will improve the quality of life of the neighbours and will give greater visibility to the neighbourhood and the businesses in the area".

The works have a completion period of 18 months and an investment of 15.7 million euros. "This neighbourhood needed a structure of these characteristics, as we are talking about an area of influence of more than 745 homes with an average of around 3,000 residents. The surface car park has been too small for some time, so this action is more than necessary", said the councillor, who stressed that "as well as benefiting the residents who can apply for a space in the new car park and who have seen their homes revalued, the nearly one hundred businesses will be boosted economically, as customers will be able to park in the spaces reserved for rotation".

Martín also pointed out that "we are using a different construction system to the one we have used in El Juncal and La Candelaria", which is why he wanted to send a reassuring message to the residents. "Precisely this pit construction system, instead of emptying, aims to protect the foundations and structures of these houses, which are very old. When carrying out the geotechnical studies, the engineers told us that this mechanism was the best to guarantee safety and, for this reason, it is the one we have chosen, even if it means an extra cost compared to the car parks already built in other parts of the city".

In this way, the construction procedure for the car park infrastructure in the Los Santos neighbourhood is 'cut & cover', consisting of the initial execution of the vertical structural elements such as the screens and pillars, followed by the execution of the floor slabs. Once the infrastructure has been completed, the car park equipment and systems will be installed as well as the final architectural elements.

The car park in the Los Santos neighbourhood will occupy practically the entire Plaza La Cala, Plaza Mijas and Plaza Los Olivos, connecting them all via Calle San Matías, all of which will be underground in a four-storey structure with a total of 235 parking spaces distributed as follows: 50 spaces on floor -1 (35 standard, 6 standard for electric recharging and 9 for reduced mobility); 61 standard spaces on floor -2; another 61 standard spaces on floor -3; and 62 standard spaces on floor -4. The total surface area amounts to 2,769 square metres.

The idea of the Town Hall is that one third of the spaces will be for rotation and the other two thirds will be for subscribers. The facilities will have the same public prices as the rest of the car parks in the town: the first hour will be free; from the second to the ninth hour, a single rate of one euro will be applied and, likewise, from the ninth hour to 24 hours, a maximum rate of nine euros prorated in fractions of five minutes will be paid.

Standard parking spaces will be 4.75 metres long by 2.50 metres wide, while spaces for people with reduced mobility will be 5 metres long by 3 metres wide plus a 1.50 metre approach area. All lanes will be one-way and 4 metres wide.

On the other hand, a ramp will be built for vehicles to enter the car park from San Jorge street, next to the connection with La Cala square and a ramp for vehicles to leave the car park in Mijas square. Both ramps are located in the central islet, partially occupying pedestrian and parking areas, with a maximum gradient of 20 percent.

In addition, there are two pedestrian accesses from the outside, equipped with stairs and a lift, in compliance with the regulations for the elimination of architectural barriers.

Access control and collection management will be carried out with the installation of automatic payment machines at the pedestrian access to the car park at street level, while for vehicle access control, entry machines will be installed to register the entry of the vehicle by capturing the number plate through a number plate reader. Pedestrian access control will consist of the installation of intercoms at the pedestrian entrances.

In addition, the car park will have an information system so that drivers know the number of free spaces on each floor.
