A total of 106 players took part in the 25th edition of the Feria de La Cala Trophy, a competition that was played last Sunday 23rd of July at the America Course of La Cala Resort, 18 holes, under the individual 'stableford' modality. On the sporting side, the competition left several winners. The first place Ladies went to Sue Bassi; the winner of the first gentlemen's category was Andrew McCorquodale; of the second, Antonio Carmona; and of the third, Gustavo Caspueñas. The Scratch winner was Peter Russell. "We would like to thank all the golfers who participated today in this 'Trofeo Feria de La Cala de Mijas' and although they were not all able to win, the important thing on days like today is to participate and that they enjoyed a magnificent day", said the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs). 

For his part, Caspueñas was very happy to have managed to win in his category: "I play in an association in La Cala de Mijas, we play on all the courses regularly, every weekend, and this is the first time I have won, I am delighted with life, because I had never participated in a tournament with so many people with me being the winner". 

Solheim Cup

The trophy couldn't have got off to a better start, as all the participants were able to get a close-up view and have their photo taken with the Solheim Cup, the women's Ryder Cup, which has been visiting our town over the last few days. "It is the biggest women's golf event in the world, two teams compete, Europe and USA, and that is its greatness. The 12 best European players compete against the 12 best American players and play for the honour of winning," said the executive director of the Solheim Cup, Alicia Garrido.

The Solheim Cup has been held since 1990 and will take place from September 18th to 24th at Finca Cortesín.

Special guest

During the trophy ceremony, La Cala Resort welcomed Cabell B. Robinson, designer of the golf courses at the resort. "For us it is an honour to have him here, he is a gentleman, almost a legend of world golf for all the golf course designs in all parts of the world", said La Cala Resort's general manager, Sean Corte-Real.

Robinson said it was "extremely difficult" to design the course "because of the ups and downs, with its valleys and hills".
