Cerro del Águila wastewater treatment plant will use biogas for energy

  • Acosol will carry out this project in the main stations on the Costa del Sol
  • Entrance to the Cerro del Águila wastewater treatment plant

It will carry out this work with its own resources and with a grant from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan Funds

The public water company belonging to the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Acosol, has reported that it has been awarded a grant of 1,137,150 euros to be used for projects whose priority is sustainability and care for the environment, in addition to an amount allocated by the company itself. With these actions, the main wastewater treatment plants on the Costa del Sol, Cerro del Águila WWTP (Mijas-Fuengirola), Arroyo de la Miel WWTP (Benalmádena), Arroyo de la Víbora WWTP (Marbella) and the Guadalmansa WWTP (Estepona), will be able to consume their own energy thanks to the biogas that will be produced.

The total investment to be made by Acosol is 6,083,449.24 euros, from which the amount of this aid, 1,137,150 euros, will be subtracted. Specifically, the aid amounts to 342,000 euros for the Cerro del Águila WWTP (Mijas-Fuengirola); 111,150 euros for the Arroyo de la Miel WWTP (Benalmádena); 342,000 euros for the Arroyo de la Víbora WWTP (Marbella), and 342,000 euros for the Guadalmansa WWTP (Estepona).

For Acosol's executive managing director, Manuel Cardeña, "achieving the maximum benefit and use of the biogas produced by the anaerobic digestion process in our stations is the objective that Acosol will develop to obtain thermal and electrical energy for self-consumption in these facilities, with the aim of achieving a cleaner and more sustainable economy".

Origin of the subsidy
This grant was awarded by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), as part of the programme of incentives for singular projects for biogas installations within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, a project financed by the European Union-NextGenerationEU.
