The Department for the Environment of the Mijas Town Hall has undertaken a series of improvements to the Mirador de las Águilas, located in the Sierra Alpujata. These tasks, carried out by Renta Básica employees over the last few weeks, have consisted mainly of clearing the brush in the surrounding area, with the aim of making it easier for people to access this spot and to prevent forest fires. 

As the new councillor for the department, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), explained on Monday, "as well as the work to clean up the area, the timbers that make up the structure of the viewpoint have also been underpinned and strengthened". In this regard, Councillor Cruz appealed to the responsibility of the public to maintain the Sierra Alpujata bird-watching point and the other two located in the La Roza area and next to the beach, at Punta de Calaburra, in good condition.

Also, coinciding with the arrival of the summer period, the council asked us to take extreme precautions, avoiding burning and bonfires in the mountains. "Precisely, today, we have found the remains of a fire next to this viewpoint, so now more than ever and with the very dry hydrological year we have had, we must be aware that any irresponsible act in this area can produce a catastrophe or a fire to which, unfortunately, we are already accustomed", he insisted. 

Finally, Cruz said that this "balcony" is very popular with birdwatchers, "especially now, when you can see both the species that are passing through and those that stay here all year round". Short-toed eagles, booted eagles, black kites, sparrowhawks and Egyptian vultures are just some of the birds that fly over this area.
