Soroptimist International Costa del Sol decided in 2021 to participate in the United Nations' call, at an international level, to implement measures to convert our food system at a local level "into a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient one", according to the group. Among the different actions that have been initiated for this purpose, the Soroptimist Award stands out, which promotes local organisations and companies that focus their work on food sustainability.
On June 5th, coinciding with World Environment Day, the association presented the second edition of the Soroptimist Nourish your Optimism Award. "The reaction of the jury, participants and guests of the previous edition, has been very positive and we have decided to continue looking for people in the province of Malaga who are generating a positive change within our food system and who deserve recognition," said Daphne Theunissen, president of the association, who said that "this year, we hope to have the participation of many more rural organisations in the province of Malaga".
That is why Soroptimist International Costa del Sol invites you to highlight local organisations and businesses, especially those that are promoting organic food, local products, teaching about sustainable food and those that implement practices for responsible consumption, avoiding food waste and ensuring proper disposal of plastic. The deadline for online entries for the second edition of the awards is September 15th, 2023.
"In addition, this year we are working together with an impressive group of representatives from important organisations: Fundación Aula del Mar, Justicia Alimentaria, Cruz Roja Málaga and Sabor a Málaga", highlighted the president of the collective, who added that "we are very grateful to Costa Women, who are supporting us in promoting the award this year and we would also like to thank Mijas Comunicación for their continued support".
Five categories
The Soroptimist Award will have several categories, such as 'Food growing and distribution', 'Sustainable food production', 'Food education and awareness' and 'Innovation and technology'.
