Tourist routes

The tourist route programme for foreign residents, Mijas Secrets, held a new activity  last Saturday 25th, a guided visit to Bodegas Hermanas López Lavado, owner of the Viña Tamisa brand. The participating group, mainly Danish residents, visited one of the vineyards that the company runs in Mijas.

The aim of this activity, according to the programme’s tour guide Pia Bruun, is “to tell and show that it has been and still is possible to produce wine here”. “Above all, we focus on viticulture, how to plant or make wine within the characteristics of Mijas”, she added. The fact is that Mijas used to be a land of wine, a reality that Javier López, the company’s managing director, set out to recover by producing wine today, which he defined as “top of the range”, made in a traditional manner and by means of a 100% natural process. “In this vineyard, there are approximately 4,000 vines planted in an area of one hectare and we produce 3,500 bottles; we have Tempranillo, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Chardonnay varieties”, explained López.

Opinions of the attendees

The participants were interested in the wine tradition in Mijas: “I have had a small flat in Mijas for seven years now. I am very interested in art and wine. I read about this a few weeks ago and my husband and I, as we are interested in wine, said we had to go and see vineyards and especially a vineyard outside Mijas Pueblo”, said one of the attendees, Jaren Brinck.

Daniel Moineau, who also attended the visit, explained that he has lived in the lower part of the village for years but was not familiar with the vineyards. “It’s a surprise”, he said and was curious to know more about the wine tradition in Mijas after tasting one of the wines produced by these bodegas.
