The Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), and the Councillor for Education, Mariló Olmedo (Cs), attended the start of the 2022/2023 school year in the municipality last 12th September. "Today, around 8,000 children are starting the school year in Mijas. A return to school that has started in a very calm and organised way in our town, especially in Las Lagunas, where the largest number of infant and primary students gather about 5,000", said the Mijas Councillor at the CEIP Las Cañadas.
In this way, the division of urban centres reflects that in Las Lagunas, some 5,056 students started their classes, of which 1,384 are infants and 3,672 are in primary school. In Mijas Pueblo, are a total of 393 children, 92 are in the nursery, and 301 are in primary school. Finally, in La Cala, there are 2,273 pupils, of which 578 are infants and 1,695 primaries. "We have worked all these holiday months to have everything ready for our children to meet their classmates in the best possible facilities," said González. He recalled that "we are a young municipality where more and more couples with children of school age are arriving, which makes us set up a collaborative project with the school councils themselves.
So, in Mijas 7,722 students started the school year, of which 2,054 belong to the infant cycle and 5,668 to the primary one. "Throughout the summer, we worked to get all the facilities ready. Not only the necessary repairs for the conservation and improvement of the infrastructure, but also thorough cleaning and disinfection of the facilities, indoors and outdoors. Everything is ready for the arrival of our children and, from the department, we will continue to work closely with the management and teaching teams to ensure that the school year runs smoothly", Olmedo assures us.
The Education team undertook work related to the repair of blinds, bathrooms, windows or painting surfaces and walls, among others. During the course, they fix the problems that arise, but in the summer, they carry out more comprehensive work to improve the facilities. The Councillor emphasised that "insect and rodent pest control has also been implemented, and water tanks disinfection", to which she added "the cleaning service is maintained in the mornings in these schools".
Families return to school routine
The image of the day throughout Andalusia was that of the thousands of children who after more than two holiday months' returned to school. We have seen many children excited and eager to resume classes and others less eager. "School is great, but I prefer summer, with no studying", said Nahor Ruiz, a 6th-grade pupil at CEIP Las Cañadas while another classmate of the same year, Aroa Cozár, said she was looking forward to it, "and I like the first few days because they prepare things and so on, but I don't like it as much when the homework starts".
To make the first school day smoother, the teaching staff welcomed pupils in a staggered manner. "The first to enter the classroom were the older children, so we went little by little until we reached the three-year-olds. They have only entered for a short time so that the day would not be too hard for them. They will all enter from 9.30 am," said Paco León, the school's headmaster. The student Natalia Jiménez explained "this week is quiet because they have given us our books, we have brought some materials, and we are getting to know our new teachers".
The return to routine is not only for the children but also for the parents. Also, in many cases, the grandparents are in charge of taking their grandchildren to school. "But it's the best thing I do, my wife and I love bringing our grandchildren to school. They even stayed over at home today," said grandfather José Cortés. And Verónica Serrano, mother of two children, added, "my children have been asking me all the time since 9 am when we were coming to school because they are both eager to see their friends again".
The 2022/2023 school year began with some new features. The Organic Law modification on Education states in the first, third, and fifth Primary School years, "creativity and emotional management will be encouraged instead of just memory". "All so that the pupils leave with skills that will be useful in the future for their personal and professional development", explained the Las Lagunas school's headmaster.
Finally, we would like to conclude with the message given by Alejandro Muñoz to his classmates: "I want everyone to be motivated at school and study hard so that they can have good degrees and careers when they grow up", insisted the little boy.
