So far this year, the Mijas Local Police have issued around 200 fines for littering. "These are cases linked to sanctioning procedures for non-compliance with the ordinance on the waste deposit. The aim is not to collect money, but rather to appeal to the responsibility and citizenship of everyone to keep the municipality streets as clean as possible while promoting the recycling of different waste," says the Councillor for Public Roads, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE). These sanctions "account for almost half of the total number of sanctioning procedures initiated for breaching ordinances, which also include others such as not picking up pet excrement, noise or neighbourhood nuisance", adds the Councillor.
In this sense, the SIMA Unit, the group in charge of controlling security and community safety ordinance compliance, has been responsible for monitoring the correct use of containers and areas set up for all types of waste throughout the municipality.
As reported by the local authority, this specific unit consists of plainclothes officers monitoring at different day hours at various points of organic waste collection. It intends to produce a deterrent effect to incur actions that lead to dirt in the Mijas streets.
Fines of up to 3,000 euros
The Public Roads Department and the Local Police remind those people who misuse the containers provided for the rubbish deposit and waste in the street can be fined up to 1,500 euros, in the case of those who do not use them, up to 3,000 euros. 1,500 euros in the case of serious offences such as dumping rubbish or waste on the public highway that hinders traffic or creates a health risk and the deposit of household waste outside the places designated for this action. 3,000 euros in the case of serious offences that include toxic, dangerous waste on urban containers.
The Consistory reminds residents that the timetable for waste collection in the entire municipality is from 8 pm to midnight. There is a telephone number, 952 66 68 68 66, to give notice of waste collection, which should be deposited at the nearest waste collection point to their homes. It is also recommended that in the summer period, and given the high temperatures in the municipality during these months, household waste should be deposited after 9 pm.
Clean points
For all these reasons, the local authority asks for the citizens' cooperation in keeping the streets clean and the image of the municipality well cared for and reminds them that there are three points available to facilitate the recycling of all types of materials: in Mijas Pueblo, at the entrance to the municipal car park, in Las Lagunas on Agua Street (Polígono San Rafael), and La Cala, Camino de la Majadilla del Muerto, next to the water treatment plant.
