For the second consecutive year, the Entrerríos Rural Centre has won the used clothes collection competition, organised by the Mijas Town Hall and sponsored by the recycling company East-West. The school has delivered 495 kilos of used clothes, or in other words, almost 16 kilos per pupil, coming in first place in this campaign. "I have brought many clothes bags containing trousers, dresses, skirts and shoes", said Alicia Nirschl, a pupil at the school on Wednesday. Another pupil, Ángel Vitaliano, said he was " happy that these clothes are used for new things".
Up to eight schools in the municipality (seven primary schools and one secondary school) have taken part in this initiative, collecting almost 2,500 kilos of used clothes, which will soon be reused or recycled. "Thanks to this action, we are helping to preserve our environment, as we will be reducing the number of materials used in the manufacture of these clothes and reducing the use of fuel and gas emissions. Therefore, we are achieving some important and necessary objectives for our planet," said the Councillor responsible for the Environment at Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs).
The Councillor for Education, Mariló Olmedo (Cs), appreciated the interest shown by all the schools that have participated in this activity, "especially the Entrerríos students who have turned out to promote the recycling of textile garments, thus helping the environment, and that is a source of pride for Mijas".
The Entrerríos Rural Centre Director, Miguel Ángel Velasco, also had words for the school's families. "They are always involved in recycling, perhaps, because of the natural environment in which we are. We try to take care of what we have, and all this makes the families aware, to the point that we have managed to collect an average of 16 kilos of clothes per pupil".
As a prize, the company sponsoring the competition, East-West, today presented them a gift, a cheque for 250 euros, which the school will use to install a new net in the playground and purchase sports equipment. "We are happy with the response from this school and the other participants. We didn't expect to collect so many clothes.
It seems we are becoming more aware of textile recycling. This is a joy for us," said Ivonee Daza, East-West's area delegate.
The textiles collected will be recycled into materials for mops, tyre fillers, or cleaning rags, among other recycled products.
