Silence for Ukraine

Political representatives of the Mijas Town Hall also wanted to show their support

Like many other places in Spain on Wednesday, Mijas joined the silent rally called by the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Representatives of the corporation, municipal workers, Mijas residents and Ukrainian residents remembered the thousands of people who are already losing their lives because of the war unleashed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Boys, girls, men and women are dying in a country under the hands of a murderer because you can’t call him anything else, who is attacking a defenceless people without any kind of justification,” said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE).
The Mayor also explained that the FEMP held a video conference meeting that same day, with Mayors from all over the country to inform them of a Ukrainian Refugees Reception Plan. It is already being drawn up by this body. “Depending on the information we receive, we will establish a reception network with those families who have already shown their intention to take in Ukrainian families. We will study the public spaces we can offer to take in these refugees,” he said.
In this regard, González highlighted the measures package which is being prepared by the central government to welcome more than 12,000 Ukrainian refugees in our country as a war result.” From now on, they will have access to public health care, will have work permits during the time they remain in an asylum situation. Also, they will be able to send their children to our schools”.

Impressions of the corporation
Political representatives of the Mijas Town Hall also wanted to show their support. “I must also say a word in favour of the Russians who live in Mijas, who are victims of their President and who surely do not agree with this type of attitude,” said José Carlos Martín, spokesman for the Ciudadanos Municipal Group.
For her part, the Mijas PP Councillor, Carmen Márquez, said she felt “moved by the moment lived at the gates of the Town Hall”, while also expressing her “rejection of war and hope that Putin the murderer rectifies”.
The non-attached Councillor Esperanza Jiménez, for her part, called for dialogue between institutions to put an end to all the wars that are currently being waged in the world, “which are created for this purpose, to avoid this suffering, which is not necessary”.

Ukrainian residents María Abramets is a Ukrainian resident who works as a cleaner at the TRH Mijas hotel, along with four other compatriots, and she took the floor at this rally to express her pain at this conflict “we all have families hiding in metro stops and basements”. She also denounced that “when Russia broke away from Ukraine, it took everything, the money we had saved and our factories. And now, it wants to take the lives of many innocent people.
The TRH Mijas hotel Director, Félix Reyes, also assured that these are hard days for these workers, “and I don’t know where they get their strength from, because they continue to carry out their tasks, they have not asked for leave or sick leave, on the contrary, they are putting all their energy into their work”, he said.

Foreigners creates a list for Ukrainian residents to help as interpreters

The Foreigners Councillor, Arancha López (Cs), announced that the Department has opened a list for all Ukrainian residents in Mijas to sign up as interpreters and translators given the arrival of refugees in the municipality. “The first people affected by the war are already arriving in the province, and we want to be prepared for those who are still to come to Mijas. Many Mijas families have asked to take in some refugees, and we want them to find compatriots who will speak them in their language after the first shock of arriving in an unknown country, without knowing the language,” said the Councillor.
Those who wish to participate in this translation task can register at the Foreigners Department in the Mayor’s Office in La Cala, by emailing frd@mijas.es or by phoning 952589010.

CLC World donates 1,600 kilos of food and hygiene products

The CLC World Foundation has donated more than a ton of food to Ukraine. For this means, the Mijas Town Hall has set up three places for the food and material collection. “It has been a massive contribution of 1,300 kilos of non-perishable food and between 200 and 300 kilos of hygiene products. Right now, from the foundation, we are also coordinating to send sanitary material”, explained the foundation ambassador, Hernán Lara. In this sense, the Mayor of the city, Josele González (PSOE), wanted to “thank this entity that is always available to Mijas needs. On this occasion, it has shown its solidarity with this cause. In the same vein, the Councillor also wanted to thank “each of the companies that have helped to a greater or lesser extent”.
