On the occasion of the European Day of 112, which celebrates every 11th February, the Regional Government (Junta de Andalucía) this morning recognised the work that different entities carried out from their activity area in The Sierra Bermeja fire. One of the distinguished groups was Mijas Protección Civil.

The Andalusian Government Delegate in Malaga, Patricia Navarro, was in charge of presenting the award after dedicating a few words to the honorees: "You are an example of what makes us strong and better in a caring and committed Malaga. Responsible and brave people who care for and look after others". For several days, 18 Civil Protection groups carried out support tasks in the Sierra Bermeja fire last September. A fire that lasted 46 days and burnt more than 10,000 hectares. Tamara Vera (PSOE), Civil Protection Councillor at Mijas Town Hall, was also present at the presentation of this award. "I think the whole municipality is to be congratulated for receiving this recognition. We should all feel proud of the group we have in Mijas, because they are a group of volunteers who are always present, whenever they are needed, even when they are needed in other municipalities, as happened with this fire".

From the very first moment, Mijas was ready to help in this fire, although according to the Councillor, the Civil Protection work "deserves recognition for all they have always done", and even more so, since the pandemic began. She added that "they have become an essential part of our municipality, and so the Town Council's Government team has been working constantly with them, which is why we strengthen our group, as we have done over the last year, making all the resources we have deemed appropriate".

For their part, the members of the Mijas group were happy and grateful for this distinction. In the Mijas Civil Protection head group words, Toñi Castro, "it is a satisfaction of our work to be recognised because we all do our bit, and the truth is that it is a source of pride for all our colleagues who, in this case, were involved in the fire.  We worked for three days and two nights, until the fire was extinguished". And it is a job that, in some cases, they have been doing for many years, so we can only say: Thank you.
