If you are passionate about history, and specifically that of Mijas, you have the opportunity to visit the Cortijo de Acebedo Archaeological site on October 29th. Mijas thus joins a series of guided visits to different sites organised by the European Council. The objective is for citizens to know what life was like for our ancestors. “Once again we are part of the European Commission that is visiting the archaeological sites and specifically that of the municipality of Mijas is the only archaeological site in Malaga that is going to be visited while it is active, that is, we are currently excavating”, explained the councillor for Historical Heritage of the Mijas Town Hall, Laura Moreno (PSOE).

“We have perhaps the best preserved archaeological site on the entire Andalusian coast and especially on the Malaga coast”, said Juan José de la Rubia, head of the Department of Historical Heritage in the Mijas Town Hall.

The objective of these guided tours is for citizens to know and appreciate the archaeological remains in this place. “We are going to take a tour that will cover everything that has been excavated so far, in a chronological route from the oldest part, where there are remains from the 6th-8th century BC to the most modern parts that correspond to the Roman period, much more recent, from the 6th century AD”, added De la Rubia.

All those citizens interested in participating in these guided tours will have to register in advance by sending an email to patrimoniohistorico@mijas.es or by calling number 952 485 900 extension 3501. Visits will be made at 11:00 and 12:30 hours, in small groups (15 people).

“That day we will also receive a special visit, as the students from the IES Las Lagunas (High School) will be coming to see the site, because they are studying the subject of the Historical Heritage of Andalusia. What better way can there be to get to know about our ancestors than to visit a site that they have so close by and be explained about it by the professionals in the matter who are currently working there?”, stated the councillor.
The importance of the Cortijo de Acebedo site lies in its dating, its wide extension and the good conservation of the remains found to date. “There are a number of unique structures on the site that have been very well preserved thanks to the fact that this area has never been built, as it is a rustic zone and is located next to the river”, explained De la Rubia.

“We have a furnace that is being excavated right now within the research project that we are carrying out; we have the area of the balnearium of the ancient Roman baths; a wine-pressing area, and so on. It is a site that houses tremendous diversity in terms of structures, a spectacular chronology that spans more than 200 years and, all in all, it provides knowledge about our past”, he added.
