The Soroptimist International Costa del Sol women’s club in Mijas is in luck. When it is about to celebrate its 15th anniversary, the local group has received an award from its European federation for the project that it has been developing for years to help women who are victims of gender violence. “Soroptimist Costa del Sol was founded in 2006, but the work to provide assistance on gender violence began in 2008. Although we receive this award now, it is not a new project”, declared the president of the association at the local level, Laura Domínguez. Soroptimist International Costa del Sol has received the ‘Best Practices 2021’ award in the ‘Violence against Women’ category. The Mijas project has been chosen from among 4,000 other international initiatives. “We are very proud of this award. We have been told that what we do should even be promoted in other countries, because it is an example to be followed”, said Anette Skou, member of Soroptimist International since its inception. Soroptimist’s work, that has been carried out for years on gender-based violence, is especially directed at foreign victims. “We started helping with languages, because many foreign women felt isolated”, said the secretary, Larysa Blai. However, what Soroptimist does today goes far beyond simply acting as interpreters. The S.I. association is also integrated into the Viogenex municipal working group, where the Foreigners Department, the Mijas Equality Department, the Civil Guard, the SIMA group of the Local Police in Mijas, the Lions Club, Age Care and the Red Cross actively participate.
