Beatriz Martín. Last Friday, a solidarity and informative exhibition on Alzheimer’s was inaugurated at the Cultural Centre in Fuengirola that brings together a series of photographs of the ‘Camino de Santiago’, which do not reflect the path of a regular pilgrim but those of two involved with a cause: to make visible and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. ‘Camino de la memoria’ (The memory walk) is the graphic and literary account of journalist Antonio Ortín and photographer Alejandro Hurtado, who have managed to capture a social portrait and a neurological vision of this disease with their photographs.
The project started in 2017, when these authors covered the ‘Camino de Santiago’ between Malaga and the capital of Compostela by bicycle, stopping at the Alzheimer’s associations along the route. The trip led to a book to raise funds for AFA Málaga and, later, the project, with the contributions by UMA (Malaga University) professor Enrique Viguera, became this exhibition at the service of AFA Fuengirola-Mijas and with which they commemorate World Alzheimer’s Day.
“The idea of bringing it here is to support AFA Fuengirola-Mijas, which today still provides assistance to any patient with Alzheimer’s or other dementia; it is the family associations that provide this support because the public health system facilitates drug therapy, but all that comes later is being done by family associations”, said Ortín.
The director of AFA Málaga, José Moreno, also attended the inauguration, highlighting that his association has been in charge of supporting other associations, providing support and collaborating in the edition of the book, giving it publicity and, of course, opening the doors of our AFA to get to know our families and users”.
From AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa, they appreciate the contribution of this project to the cause of the association. “This work that they have done has been made available to AFA, which is greatly appreciated”, said the president of AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa, Paqui Lebrón.
The Mijas Town Hall, as assured by the councillor for Social Services, Hipólito Zapico, has allocated this year to AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa a grant of 10,000 euros, which was highlighted by the non-attached councillor of the Mijas Town Hall, Esperanza Jiménez, who stressed: “I believe that only the people who have suffered it closely, understand; I think there is a great lack of information”.
After the opening of the exhibition, a round table was held led by Ortín, the director AFA Málaga and the neurobiologist Elisabeth Sánchez, who explained how the brain of a person with Alzheimer’s works. The event also served to present the Antonio Lebrón Award to the caregiver of the year, which this year has gone to José Vidrié, who has been in charge of caring for his wife for years.
