Last Thursday, July 29th, this new road was opened to traffic, which connects Miguel Hernández and AMPA Las Caracolas avenues, in sector 31, with Camino de Coín. The works, which have been carried out on time and have involved an investment of one million euros, are intended to reduce traffic congestion in Las Lagunas and the structuring of this part of Mijas, improving mobility.

The mayor, Josele González (PSOE), with the councillor for Infrastructure and Works and for Town Planning, José Carlos Martín (Cs) and Andrés Ruiz (Cs), respectively, inaugurated this section of road. “It is a road that will provide a connection with sector 31, the upper part of Doña Ermita, the area where the Indira Gandhi school is located and the future Las Lagunas high school will be built, the area of ​​expansion of the nucleus, which needs this type of fundamental roads to ensure, above all, that traffic can flow and improve accessibility for the residents of this area”, said the mayor.

According to González, the execution of this road has been “a priority” within his government project with the aim of improving circulation and avoiding traffic jams in this area, thus facilitating mobility for residents and the educational community, “the great beneficiaries”, he said, of this new connection.
“We are talking about a stretch of 338 linear metres with a double platform, which provides more capacity for vehicles, having two-way traffic with two lanes and that allows us to continue exploring the next step we have to take, which is the execution of Camino de Campanales, which could not be carried out until we could open this road”, highlighted Martín.

The avenue also has pavements that are almost three metres wide on each side as well as two-metre line parking. It is connected to the supply network, to the evacuation of water and rainwater, energy and public lighting, which are works that were completed on the 29th.

Urban complexities

The connection project to link with Camino de Coín has had to overcome many urban complexities. 8,700 square metres of a total of seven affected plots have been occupied. As well as this, and in addition to the expropriation of the land, the project needed to “overcome the flood zone that the area presented on the ‘Junta’s’ map”, said Ruiz, who added that, “in addition, we have had to enable the availability of the land with these expropriations, that, in many cases, have made the process difficult; and all this has greatly delayed the execution of the work itself and the opening of the road”.

The councillor for Town Planning also wanted to highlight the collaboration of the residents, to make it possible for this project to improve the traffic flow to become a reality. “Practically everyone made it very easy because they understood that this road was necessary”, he said.

New access to Las Lagunas

This new infrastructure now becomes one more access point to Las Lagunas, where there are other planned actions such as the expansion of the Campanales Road and the unfolding of Camino de Coín.

“This connection with Camino de Coín will allow other types of infrastructures to be created, which we will be planning throughout this mandate and will also be developed in this growing area of the municipality, where real estate promotions will be carried out in which we will welcome more neighbours. We have to be prepared and plan all the accesses that these new districts will require”, concluded the mayor.
