Novelties regarding the MOT technical inspections

  • A new registration procedure is established for vehicles from the United Kingdom.

This new regulation becomes more demanding on issues such as the operation of ABS

A new manual of procedures for technical inspections of vehicles, published by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, has already entered into force. This new regulation becomes more demanding on issues such as the operation of ABS, which becomes a serious fault in vehicles in which it is not mandatory. In other words, if the dashboard warning signal remains on, from now on it will be considered a serious defect. To date, it was considered a minor defect and was not a reason for refusal of the renewal of the MOT permit.

In the case of the odometer, for example, it will be considered a serious defect not only when it is not possible to identify mileage, but also when the reading coincides with that of the last periodic inspection registered at the Central Traffic Headquarters. In terms of brakes, those with electric parking will not undergo a brake meter test and the brakes in motorhomes, ambulances, and special cars will be reviewed. Also included are new requirements for motorcycles, in terms of license plates and brake lights.

In terms of emission control, the novelty affects the extensive range of electric vehicles (REEV), which from now on will follow the same protocol as hybrid vehicles. In addition, the measurement method in motorcycles and the identification of the advanced emission control system in these vehicles are required.

UK Vehicles

On the other hand, and as a result of Brexit, a new registration procedure is established for vehicles from the United Kingdom, since they will be considered vehicles from third countries (not belonging to the European Economic Area). Therefore, from now on, they will have to meet all the requirements for the registration of this type of vehicle and will have to carry out the necessary import procedures. In addition, the approvals granted by the United Kingdom will not be valid as European approvals, therefore losing all the benefits that this entails from the point of view of documentation and expediting of procedures.
