Soroptimist International Costa del Sol states that education is one of the cornerstones of its work. Since 2015, the club has been supporting students at the University of Málaga and, each year, nominates a local student for the Soroptimist International of Europe scholarship. More than 30,000 Soroptimist members contribute to this fund, which supports approximately 30 women each year.

Lucrecia Souvirón, a member and project coordinator, explained that “we usually start looking for students at the end of October. We check whether they meet the criteria before inviting them for an interview. It’s very interesting to talk to the younger generation and learn about all the projects they’re involved in; it’s very inspiring”, she said. “We’re delighted to announce that this year’s candidate is Paula Warren Jiménez, and she will receive support from this fund. Her work is important in the fight against climate change”.

Scholarship recipient

Warren holds a degree in Biology and is currently completing her doctoral thesis on carbon dynamics in salt marshes from a restoration perspective. Salt marshes play an essential role in the global carbon cycle due to their extraordinary capacity to capture and store atmospheric CO2. Her research examines whether restored salt marches successfully regain this carbon sequestration capacity. She also studies their behaviour when abandoned and assesses their potential to act as carbon sinks.

 

Paula stated that “the Soroptimist Scholarship will provide me with the essential support I need to focus fully on completing my doctoral thesis”. This funding “not only advances her scientific career but also contributes to the progress of research that is fundamental to the development of nature-based solutions aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change”, said Soroptimist.
