On Saturday 30th history once again made its way from the past with the recreation by the Historical-Cultural Association Torrijos 1831 of the landing of the liberal General Torrijos.
The date: December 2nd 1831. The place: the beach of El Charcón de La Cala. The facts: José María de Torrijos y Uriarte and his 48 capable men landed on this corner of the Mijas coastline with the aim of trying to restore to Spain the freedoms taken away by the absolutist monarch Ferdinand VII. So that these events do not fall into oblivion, the Torrijos 1831 Historical-Cultural Association has been carrying out this tribute in Mijas for more than two decades.
The story, as is well known, did not end well. Torrijos' attempt to start an uprising to restore the Constitution of 1812 quickly failed. The sparse population of Malaga did not provide the expected support and the authorities reacted hastily by capturing the rebels. Torrijos and his companions were arrested and put on trial.
The general and his men were executed nine days later, on December 11th, on another beach, that of San Andrés, in Málaga. But although his uprising failed, the figure of Torrijos became a symbol of the struggle for liberties and constitutional rights in Spain.
This year, the Historical and Cultural Association Manzanares Estepona 1831 has also joined the staging of the event. A floral offering was also made next to the monument that commemorates this historic event.
