There’s not long to go before the La Cala de Mijas Fair begins, which this year will run from the 22nd to the 27th of July. One of the most eagerly awaited events of the summer, the fair now has both a poster and a full programme. On Friday 11th, in the Plaza del Torreón, locals and visitors gathered to hear the proclamation, that officially marked the start of the festivities, delivered this year by neighbour Paco Lozano, who shared some heartfelt words about his beloved hometown, his "favourite place in the world”, as he described it.

The event began with performances by the UP groups led by Víctor Rojas, who gave their all on stage in this almost official start to the La Cala festivities. After the dancing, last year's town crier, Loli Arroyo, introduced Paco Lozano, town crier for the La Cala Fair 2025, "who belongs to one of the most well-known families in the coastal village, in fact, there is no event in La Cala where someone from the Lozano family is not helping out, representing the town, or simply enjoying themselves".

This was echoed by Lozano during his speech, which was full of memories and heartfelt words for La Cala. "Let's not forget that this town has not only been a fishing village, it was also a farming community, with its low houses and dirt roads, where we all knew each other by name and a single look was enough to tell if someone needed something". The speaker also reminisced about "voices calling from door to door, games on the beach, and the first fireworks that marked the start of the summer fair, when simple things were everything".

Lozano was the first librarian in La Cala, holding this position from 1987 until his retirement in 2019. "From the library we also collaborated with the Festivities Committee, organising our poetry competition, which drew a large number of participants".

The town crier also looked back on other important events linked to the La Cala Fair, such as the sports competitions; including football, tennis and golf; which are organised to mark the occasion and in which he has also been involved over the years. He praised the way the fair has grown, becoming one of the key summer events on the Costa del Sol: “It’s now full of life, colour, different accents and joined hands. Where once there were just a few paths, there are now thousands of stories crossing”.

The proclamation was warmly applauded by everyone in attendance, including the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who began her speech by congratulating "this town crier who, without a doubt, has helped us remember, and also learn about, many of the traditions that, thanks to people like him, have kept the spirit of La Cala alive".

It was also the night when the poster for the La Cala fair was unveiled. Designed by Mijas Comunicación, it showcases the best of this event to our neighbours and visitors, said the mayoress of Mijas, "and at the Mijas Town Hall we also have a responsibility to pass on our traditions, our history and our culture, not only to those who visit us, but also to young people, who are our future".

Singer Erika Leiva brought the evening to a close, in front of a large audience that included residents, friends and family of the crier, representatives from the various political groups, and, of course, tourists visiting La Cala. "The La Cala Fair is one of Mijas’ unmissable summer events. We work tirelessly to ensure there is something for everyone, thanks to the dedication of our municipal staff”, the mayoress concluded.

Programme of Activities by the Festivities Department

The councillor for Festivals, Silvia Marín (PP), also announced on Friday the programme of activities planned for the fair, as well as the main new features. On the first day, 22nd of July, the Dinner in Honour of the Elderly will take place from 21 hours. This event brings together around 300 people from this fishing village, during which the Grandfather and Grandmother of the Fair are chosen. Immediately afterwards, there will be a concert by Manuel Orta. That same day at 22:30 hours, the traditional switching on of the artistic lighting will be carried out by the mayoress alongside the grandparents of the fair. It will also be Special Children's Day, meaning that attractions will have reduced prices.

For people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the noise from the rides will be lowered every day between 19 nd 21 hours, with the same background music played to reduce noise pollution as much as possible.

On the 23rd, the traditional election of the king and queen of the festivities will take place, judged by a panel. To entertain the crowd, there will be a performance by the group El Tren de los Sueños. On the 24th, concerts will dominate the programme, with a tribute to Alejandro Sanz and a performance by the well-known band Nacha Pop.

Daytime Fair

On Friday 25th, from 14 hours, the Daytime Fair will open in the Torreón de La Cala area. Tthat evening there will be two concerts at the Municipal Booth on the fairground: one by María Ruiz and another by Javi Medina. On the 26th, Rasel will take to the stage with the show 'La Loka on Tour' and Paco Candela will close the concert programme on the 27th. On 25th and 26th of July, the fairground will host a Purple Point under the slogan ‘Respect Without Excuses’.

Regarding new features, Marín announced that "by popular demand, this year we have brought back the Mr Ugly contest, which will take place on Saturday. It will be a very fun day in which we will also crown our ‘marchoso’ and ‘marchosa’ (the most lively male and female), as well as our best-dressed flamenco woman. I encourage everyone to dress in flamenco attire for our Daytime Fair".

The councillor also revealed that, after several years without being held, the shop window and façade decorating contests are also making a return, "so I also encourage all the residents and shopkeepers in La Cala to decorate their businesses and homes, as a jury from the Festivities Committee will visit them by during the fair days and prizes will be awarded on 26th July, during the Daytime Fair".

Finally, Marín took the opportunity to acknowledge the work of all departments involved in organising and running any fair, in this case La Cala’s, “who never complain and never watch the clock, all so that the public can enjoy every event taking place during this big week".
