On Friday morning, for the first time in Mijas, a Natura 2000 Network workshop was held, an educational activity focused on raising awareness among the population about the importance of these protected areas and their contribution to the conservation of European biodiversity. This is a European ecological network of biodiversity conservation areas, made up of Special Areas of Conservation. Calahonda is one of them, thanks to its seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica, a threatened species that we are fortunate to have here in Mijas.
According to the environmental educator from Green Globe, Paola Areste, it is "a very important species because it acts as a carbon dioxide sink. We know that climate change is caused by greenhouse gases, which pose a major problem, one that this plant helps to mitigate, but it is disappearing because of human action and we must continue to conserve it".
This is why Friday's event included of a series of environmental education activities. As another environmental educator from of Green Globe, Claudia Maldonado, explained: "The day featured a beach clean-up to help care for this protected area, as well as activities to discover the species and marine life found in the area. In addition, we are going to learn about marine biology through workshops for the whole family".
We can all help support the goals of the Natura 2000 Network through actions in our immediate surroundings, for example, "by taking part in more events like this one, and incorporating small gestures into daily life, such as spreading the word about local flora and fauna. These are ways of contributing to the cause", said Paola Areste.
The ultimate aim is to ensure the long-term survival of Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
