Two Minerva figures found at the Cortijo de Acebedo archeological site

  • According to the Historical Heritage Department, the remains may have belonged to people of high social status
  • Estas piezas se han hallado durante la cuarta fase de excavación, en la zona de las termas.

The pieces are of great historical value and are in good condition

The Cortijo Acebedo archeological site continues to surprise the team of archaeologists working in the area. On Thursday 10th, during the excavations, two terracotta heads were found, along with the body of a figure representing a Roman deity.

These findings are helping us gain a deeper understanding of the type of settlement that existed here during Roman times, said the councillor for Historical Heritage at Mijas Town Hall, Lourdes Burgos (PP). “In this area where we are now, both the head of department and the municipal archaeologist have been excavating for four days, and to our surprise, this morning they found two terracotta heads and their bodies, which belong to a goddess, Minerva, the goddess of war”, the councillor stated.

This is not the first time that pieces of great historical value have been uncovered at this site. That is why an archive holds the findings from this necropolis, which attracts visits not only from students but also from the general public. “It’s a complete surprise and proves even more than we already knew, that the Cortijo de Acebedo has great historical significance,” said the coordinator of the Historical Heritage Department, Desirée Piñero.

Excavations and research alternate in an exhaustive process carried out in phases. Work is currently underway on the fourth phase, in the area of the thermal baths where the figures were found. According to Piñero, "these figures must have belonged to people of high social status and also provide insight into the condition of the settlement at that time".

The councillor for Heritage also took the opportunity to underline that “our commitment is not only to inform people about all of this, but also to look after it, protect it, and continue working so that our history is known by everyone”.

For now, these newly discovered figures will offer fresh information about the history of this important archaeological site. Located near the San Cayetano cemetery, the site lies on a plain that forms part of the Fuengirola River’s flood zone. It is a large Roman villa of considerable scale.
