The 12th 'Life is Better Without Smoke' walk is here, an event to mark World No Tobacco Day organised by the Costa del Sol Primary Care District, Las Lagunas Health Centre, and the Helath Department of the Mijas Town Hall. The walk will take place on the 29th of May in Las Lagunas and on Friday 30th of May in La Cala. The Spanish Association Against Cancer, the Local Red Cross Assembly, FIDA International, Civil Protection, and several pharmacies in the municipality are also participating. The Regional Federation of 'Ampas' (Parents' Associations) is collaborating in the activity.
This Monday saw the presentation of the new edition of this walk, organised by the Town Hall in collaboration with the 'Por un millón de pasos' (For a Million Steps) programme. As always, participation is free of charge. Five schools, around 300 students, are invited to take part, along with other groups that have already confirmed their attendance, especially for the joint end-of-event celebration featuring dynamic workshops. However, the Town Hall emphasises that general public is also welcome to join.
According to nurse Miguel Gallardo, organiser of the event, “Five schools from Mijas and two from Fuengirola are taking part with their students, but it is also open to anyone who wants to join in. The aim is to raise awareness that smoking is harmful, not just cigarettes, but also vapes and hookahs, so we are asking the whole community to support us.”
For his part, the councillor for Health, Marco Cortés (PP), recalled that “this year we are organising two walks: one in Las Lagunas and another in La Cala. We, from the Health Department, will collaborate in every way we can with this initiative. Smoking is on the rise in Spain, which is a great concern, especially the spread of vaping, this new invention that young people find very attractive. The goal of this campaign is to prevent addiction, because smoking causes many illnesses and deaths; it causes 50,000 deaths a year in Spain and is linked to 35 diseases”.
In Las Lagunas, the walk will start at 9:30 amhours from Plaza de San Valentín. The route will follow La Unión street, visiting two centres in Fuengirola before continuing to CEIP Las Cañadas. It will also stop at Campanales and Tamixa schools, ending at Cortijo Don Elías. The activity is scheduled to finish at 14:30 hours with a special closing ceremony.
Meanwhile, in La Cala, the walk will begin on Friday 30th of May at 10:00 hours from the Torreón, proceeding along the Paseo Costa del Sol to La Butibamba Park. Participants will visit El Olmo school, continue to the boulevard, then head towards Los Olivos Park, finishing at the football field, where recreational and sporting activities will take place.
