The Mijas Town Hall, through the Department of Family and Equal Opportunities, joins the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women with a full programme of activities and events. This was announced on Thursday 21st by the mayoress of Mijas and councillor for the area, Ana Mata (PP), who pointed out that the events will begin on the 25th of November at 12 noon with the reading of the institutional manifesto; it will be in the Patio de las Fuentes of the Town Hall.

“It is important to highlight days such as 25N to make society aware of the importance of everyone’s involvement to tackle a scourge such as violence against women. At the Mijas Town Hall we are committed to this and we work throughout the year to fight it. Education, training and awareness-raising are crucial”, said Mata.

On the 25th of November, at 14:00 hours, the Foreigners Department and the Soroptimist Association will inaugurate the exhibition ‘Silhouettes of women’ in La Cala Branch Office Square. At 17 hours, the associations Mujeres Mijitas and Círculo de Mujeres Casa Luna will read the manifesto they have prepared; this will take place in the Plaza de San Valentín, in Las Lagunas, and a candle lighting has also been organised. This activity is aimed at families and secondary school teachers and is promoted by the Family and Equal Opportunities Department. The first of these sessions will be at 17:00 hours in the Las Lagunas Cultural Centre and half an hour later, at 17:30 hours, in the Branch Office in La Cala. 25N in figures

The mayoress recalled the letter sent to the Ministry of the Domestic Affairs and the Government Sub-delegation of Malaga last July in which she requested a greater number of Civil Guard personnel and stressed the "imperative need" for this request to be met. In Mijas, during these months of 2024 the Family and Equal Opportunities area has assisted 163 women, of which a hundred were for the first time resorting to this department. Of the total number of queries attended to, 894, 348 correspond to general information, 204 are related to the legal field and 342 to the psychological. On the other hand, according to the data collected in VioGén, up to October 2024, 286 complaints have been filed and 413 women from Mijas are active in the system, 316 of whom have a protection order.

Soroptimist campaign: Read the signs

The women’s association Soroptimist International Costa del Sol based in Mijas is joining once again the international campaign ‘Read the Signs’, which is supported by UN Women. This year’s slogan is ‘Be cyber safe’, as the rise of technology has increased the exposure of women and girls to digital violence. On Monday 25th, Soroptimist members will join the demonstration organised in the capital by the platform against violence towards women, Violencia Cero.
