The walk against diabetes started last Sunday following the rhythm of a batucada. Drums played by youngsters from Espacio Drang set the pace of this walk going through the Senda Litoral – coastline path. Participants warmed up with a Zumba session before starting the walk. The best way to fight this illness is by exercising, as there is a connexion between obesity and type 2 diabetes, a problem affecting 13.8% of those over 18 years of age in Spain, which means over 5.3 million people. Of them, almost 3 million already had a diagnosis, the rest not even knowing they had this problem. Thus, the importance of celebrating Diabetes World Day on November 14th.
La Cala Lion’s Club organised this activity, which is held worldwide. The founder of this club and member of the diabetes support group, Anne Bowles, was very grateful for the outcome of the initiative, saying that “she was very happy to see so much support from the people of Mijas, who always help the Lions financially in order to support this type of activities, celebrated all around the world. There are many other cities throughout the planet holding similar activities, such as New York, Paris or London”.
The Mijas Lions, supported by a great number of volunteers, went back to the streets to offer information about this illness and offer free glucose tests to those participating in the walk.
Institutional support
Once again, the Mijas Foreigners Deparment collaborated with the Lions Club to organise this walk, an initiative “organised with lots of love and which aimed at increasing the visibility and prevention of an illness which is now affecting a growing number of people, but it is important to make known that some types of diabetes can be prevented and if treatment is needed, there are associations such as the Lion’s Club which can help in this process; we are very happy with the excellent participation in the activity”, said Arancha López, Councillor for Foreigners (Cs).
Other members of the local government took part in this activity. The Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE) thanked the association for their involvement with the people of Mijas. “I want to thank La Cala Lions Club for their tireless and altruistic work, not just today, but throughout the pandemic”, highlighted the mayor, who reminded everyone that “we are talking about a group which is mainly made up by foreigners, who have an especial awareness for social problems faced by neighbours in Mijas, whether they are foreigners or not”.
The support to this group was shown both day and night, as at sunset the Town Hall branch in La Cala was lit with blue lights, the colour of this cause.
