On June 3rd, the Adimi association presented the latest donation received for its care centre. On this occasion, the Rotary Club Mijas International donated outdoor awnings for its garden area. The club has been raising funds for a whole year and finally reached its goal before the arrival of summer, a dream come true. Users will be able to enjoy the outdoor areas, even during the hottest and sunniest months, thanks to these shade sails that are already installed.

 

The manager of Adimi, Laura Villa said, "we are extremely grateful to the Rotary Club because they have truly spent a year working tirelessly to find funding for this wonderful project, which is being very well used by all the users who are already benefiting from it in their various activities and programmes".

The Rotary Club Mijas has spent an entire year organising events and raising funds to fulfil its commitment to Adimi. This was confirmed by Katja Range, current president of the Rotary Club Mijas International. "This has been our major project of the year. The garden was very large but had no shade at all, and some patients even suffered sunburn because they don’t perceive the sun’s intensity due to their condition. Everyone at Rotary agreed we had to help with this".

 

To achieve this major project, many sponsors and collaborating companies were needed. Finally, before the summer, the necessary funds were raised, €8,800 for the purchase. According to Range, "it was a large amount, so in addition to all the events we organised, this year we also developed sponsorship packages for companies to support our club. Many companies collaborated precisely because it was to help Adimi’.

The users of Adimi, both those who attend during the day and those who live at the centre, are already enjoying their workshops and walks in the open air and shade, thanks to these six shade sails, which come with a 10-year guarantee and cost €8,800.

A vegetable garden

Rotary is very involved with the Adimi association and several members of this club are developing other projects with them. Providing activities and organising everyday activities with them are also very beneficial ways of collaborating with this group. One example is the new vegetable garden that is now in use at Adimi thanks to the collaboration of Rotary member George Lumby. "One day, a group of young people came to my house with my wife to work in my garden. They planted seeds and had a great time; they really enjoyed the experience. That's when the idea of creating a vegetable garden at the Adimi facilities came about", he explained. 

 

At this site, a whole class of 40 users took part in setting it up and are responsible for looking after some of the areas. According to George Lumby, “each of them has their own plant, a palm tree, and they have to come and water it. We have lots of vegetables here, like tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, and pumpkins, and they’re all doing very well”.

Thanks to George's involvement, the users are participating in a fun outdoor activity that benefits everyone, as they are already enjoying their first harvest.
