Thanks to the quality of its services and the condition of its beaches, Mijas has once again become a safe, accessible and sustainable spot on the Spanish coast. This is guaranteed by the five blue flags awarded to the municipality, one more than in previous years. "This is a very important day for Mijas and for all the municipalities that care for the coastline and want to be a benchmark. One of these is Mijas, as we have regained a Blue Flag, adding one more to the four we already had, so now we have five", said the councillor for Beaches of the Mijas Town Hall, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), at the award ceremony held on Friday at the Pez Espada hotel in Torremolinos.
The event was attended by hundreds of representatives from the recognised municipalities, as well as the Regional Minister for Tourism and Foreign Affairs of the Junta de Andalucía, Arturo Bernal; the mayoress of Torremolinos, Margarita Del Cid, who acted as hostess, and the president of the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac), José Palacios.
Calahonda-Riviera beach regains this recognition, which is once again confirmed for Calahonda-Royal Beach-La Luna, El Chaparral, El Bombo and La Cala. But these were not the only distinctions received on Friday. Mijas has once again obtained the Blue Centre certification thanks to the Watchtowers Interpretation Centre, located at El Torreón in La Cala. "We are the only municipality in Malaga that has a Blue Centre, which is also very important because it is an educational centre that connects the sea with education for children, and that is very important", added the councillor, who was responsible for collecting this certificate and the five blue flags for Mijas.

The councillor praised the work of the Beaches team, both municipal workers and those from Renta Básica, as well as the beach bar owners for meeting the criteria required by the Adeac audit, which is responsible for awarding these distinctions after carrying out an exhaustive evaluation of parameters such as water quality, environmental management, safety, information and accessibility. The president of the association, referring to the work carried out by Mijas, stressed that ‘the Town Hall is doing an excellent job. I always say that the technicians are there helping constantly to make Mijas stand out. Five blue flags, one regained, and next year they may go for another one".

This is a record number of awards, which, according to the Minister of Tourism, who presided over friday's ceremony, represents a collective effort to preserve the coastal environment and a commitment to visitors, a task for which he announced a new line of subsidies. "We think it could be before the summer, with the largest allocation to date for this type of action, 6 million euros for municipalities to improve and maintain these elements of competitiveness, diversification, environmental impact, accessibility and safety", said Bernal.

Spain is the world leader in Blue Flags, and Andalusia, with 138, is the second region with the most flags. Forty-five of these are in Malaga, making it the Andalusian province with the highest number of these awards. In addition to the awards for beaches, recognition was also given to Andalusian marinas and tourist boats that comply with sustainable and environmentally friendly management practices.
Blue Trail Award
The municipality has also recently renewed the Blue Trail Award for the Coastal Path, an annual award given by the Adeac, which was also presented at the ceremony.
The Mijas Coastal Path is a pedestrian and cycle path that runs parallel to the Mediterranean from La Cala to the municipality of Marbella. As well as being a backbone for the area, it is of great scenic value as it allows visitors to learn about the fauna and flora of the area thanks to information panels distributed at various points along the route.
