The new infrastructure will have 234 spaces, 190 of which will be for subscribers

Work on the Los Santos car park in Las Lagunas is now 70% complete. This was announced on Thursday 15th by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), during a visit to this new infrastructure, accompanied by the councillor for Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP).

The car park in the Los Santos neighbourhood will occupy almost the entire area beneath the La Cala, Mijas and Los Olivos squares, connecting them all via Calle San Matías in a four-storey underground structure with a total of 234 parking spaces. The cost of the project is 15.7 million euros. “Of the total, 190 spaces will be allocated on a monthly subscription basis for residents in the area, with nine spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility and six equipped with electric charging points”, said Mata.

Entrance and exit ramps

The project also includes a vehicle entrance ramp to the car park from Calle San Jorge, next to the connection with Plaza de La Cala, and a vehicle exit ramp from the car park in Plaza de Mijas. The two ramps are located on the central island, partially occupying the pedestrian area and parking area.

In addition, two pedestrian accesses will be provided from the outside, equipped with stairs and lifts, in compliance with regulations on the removal of architectural barriers and ensuring accessibility.

The execution of the work, which covers an area of 2,800 square metres, is proving complex. To build the car park, the retaining walls that support the structure were constructed first, followed by the upper slab. Afterwards, construction continued underground down to level -2, and then to level -4. Finally, the intermediate levels -1 and -3 will be built. According to Pina, this method generates less noise and causes less disruption to access to doorways and garages. “It is being built underground, so in this specific case, we are going down to level -2, constructing the entire slab on that level, and then going down to level -4, constructing the bottom of the car park, and from there we will build levels -1 and -3”, explained the representative of Gyocivil in Andalusia, Ángel Pina.

In this regard, the mayoress stated that “this is a very complicated project due to its location, as it is surrounded by homes, which is why a large team of engineers has been involved. The aim is to provide this area with the car park it so badly needs”, adding that “out of political responsibility, we are continuing with the commitments we have made”. She also announced that “if everything goes as planned, the work could be completed in October”.

The Town Hall apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused. “This project has involved a large team of engineers and specialists”, said the mayoress, who stressed that “from the very beginning, despite how complicated the work was, we tried to cause as little disturbance as possible to the neighbours”. “We know that any construction work involves some inconvenience”, added the mayoress, who assured that things are now calmer and that “from next month, residents will no longer hear the machinery that has been working in the area over the last few month”. In this regard, Pina explained that “we expect that by mid-June or perhaps a week earlier, the excavation equipment will have left the site, as it is the equipment generating the most noise”, with noise limited to the days when concrete pouring is necessary.

  • Actualmente están finalizando los trabajos de excavación en la planta -4.

The mayoress also announced that the application period for parking spaces will open soon “so that when the work is finished and we are handed over the keys to the car park, so to speak, residents will know which parking space they will have”.
