The International Day of Families is commemorated every 15th of May and the Mijas Town Hall wants to celebrate it in style. To mark the occasion, it has organised a full programme of activities aimed at families that will take place in the three centres of the municipality. "The family is an essential pillar of Spanish society and we must protect and support it so that families receive all the services they deserve. Providing for a family is challenging, so the Department of Social Inclusion and other departments are here to support families in MIjas", said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), on Wednesday during the presentation of the program.
The celebration will begin on Thursday 15th May at 11:30 hours in Mijas Pueblo (next to the Tourist Office), with the reading of a manifesto in a ceremony attended by students from CEIP San Sebastián School. “There will also be a collaborative mural with the theme ‘My family, my home’, based on drawings the children will have previously prepared in class”, added Mata.
Programme
In addition to the institutional event on the 15th, various activities will take place on Saturday 17th, including a Tai Chi class in La Cala at 10:30 hours, a training session for families entitled ‘Healthy Family’ at the María Zambrano Park from 10:00 hours, and a road safety session at the Parque Vial (Traffic Education Park) in Las Lagunas also starting at 10:00 hours. From 10:30 to 13:00 hours a scavenger hunt will take place in Mijas Pueblo, while in the evening, from 19:30 hours, ‘Eurovision with the family’ will be held in the Andalucía Park in Las Lagunas, where attendees can watch the live final of this popular event. “It will be a chance to support Spain’s representative and Mijas neighbour, Melody”, said Mata.
The programme will continue on Sunday 18th with a family yoga class at 10:00 hours and a survival skills activity at the Torreón de La Cala starting at 12:00 hours; a family walk along the Gomenaro river path is also scheduled to start at 10:00 hours from Avenida Andalucía, with a focus on raising environmental awareness. Meanwhile in Mijas Pueblo there will be a flamenco fitness and zumba class as part of the ‘Sport in the street’ cycle. The latter activity will start at 12:00 hours in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. "These are free activities designed for the whole family to enjoy, so I encourage everyone to take part", concluded the mayoress.
