The Mijas Town Hall, through the Infrastructures and Works Department, has put out to tender the technical assistance service contract for the drafting of the basic and execution project for the extension and remodelling of the football pitch in La Cala.
With a budget of 57,851.24€ (VAT not included), the objective is to carry out its repair and remodelling, the extension of its annexes and the improvement of energy efficiency. The works will have to be carried out while the pitch is still in use, and accessibility to it will have to be ensured. A deadline of 120 days has been set for the execution of the works.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, said that it is "a response to the need to solve the wear and tear of the facilities and to provide it with a complementary infrastructure that fits the reality, regarding the large number of people who make use of this space. For this government team, the commitment to sport is undeniable, which is why we must provide the municipality with infrastructures in accordance with its population density and the significant number of sports enthusiasts in the area. With this extension and remodelling we are meeting a long-standing request that we are finally going to solve".
The documentation to be submitted by interested companies will be divided into two separate phases. On the one hand, the replacement of the turf, the sports equipment and the pedestrian circulation around the pitch must be considered, and on the other hand, the construction of a new annexe with covered stands and complementary uses to the football pitch.
The specifications also refer to the replacement of the turf with a state-of-the-art grass that provides better performance and quality, with a high resistance to abrasion and ultraviolet rays, with optimum recovery capacity, as well as control of the rebound and rolling of the ball. All this will have a positive impact not only on the player's performance but also on the undoubtedly improved image of the pitch.

In terms of sports equipment, the football 7-a-side and 11-a-side football goals are to be replaced, preferably with wheels to avoid abrasion of the turf due to friction when they are folded down, as well as new benches for substitutes and for referees and flags. Likewise, the renovation of the drainage is also included.

The second phase of execution, the one related to the demolition of the current building, which occupies changing rooms, storage and machine room, refers to a more functional proposal that includes a covered stand, accesses with lockers, reception and administration, meeting room, changing rooms with showers and lockers, storage, accessible toilets for the public, cafeteria and terrace, as well as a multipurpose space where complementary sports practices such as training and muscle building room, among other activities, can be carried out.

In this sense, the councillor for Sports, Mª Francisca Alarcón, stressed the need for this intervention, given the state of the pitch and detailed that the current stands lack a covered area "which makes it impossible to use them on very sunny or rainy days, hence the importance of building covered stands to ensure that it is not a usele area".
All of this must be governed by solutions that maximise energy efficiency and sustainability.
According to Lourdes Burgos, councillor for Urban Planning, "it is an ambitious and very important project for Mijas that seeks to provide greater functionality and aesthetics to a space with a very significant sporting and social importance for the community".
