Mijas Town Hall to grant 90% property tax (IBI) discount for large families

  • El Ayuntamiento deberá continuar con la tramitación para que las nuevas bonificaciones puedan aplicarse, si se completa el procedimiento, a partir del 1 de enero de 2027.

A 50 per cent discount will also be granted to residents who install energy-efficiency systems

The October plenary session, which concluded with a minute’s silence for the Toledo train accident, approved on Wednesday 28th a 90 per cent discount on Property Tax (IBI) for large families in the municipality. This initiative is of indefinite duration and leaves the tax bill at just 10 per cent of the standard rate. The 90 per cent discount is the maximum permitted by law.

Furthermore, the approved amendment to the IBI by-law stipulates that each child with a recognised degree of disability of 33 per cent or more will count as two for the purposes of qualifying as a large family.

By way of example, the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), explained in a press release that if a large family has an annual IBI bill of 300 euros, under the previous 50 per cent rebate they paid 150 euros, whereas they will now pay 30 euros. “This is the policy of this government team: to support family finances, particularly those who need it most”, she said.

Energy efficiency

A 50 per cent IBI discount will also be granted to those who install systems for harnessing thermal or electrical energy from the sun or ambient sources. The discount will apply for a maximum of three years, starting from the year following the application.

Furthermore, regarding social housing (VPO), the 50 per cent rebate for the three years following its definitive official qualification is maintained. However, for subsequent periods, the previous system of extensions is replaced by an independent assessment in each financial year. Key improvements include removing both the taxpayer’s maximum income ceiling and the requirement to have previously benefited from the rebate.

Consequently, the 50 per cent reduction on the IBI bill may be requested for as long as the property retains its official social housing status, cserves as the main residence, and the owner is up to date with municipal tax obligations on the date of application. Finally, tax exemption regulations have been completed with an explicit reference to properties owned by non-profit entities.

  • El portavoz del PP, Mario Bravo, ha sido el encargado de exponer el punto en el pleno.

During the plenary session, the PP spokesperson, Mario Bravo, emphasised that “these three measures have an impact of around 200,000 euros, which is a manageable percentage within the budget”. The Socialist spokesperson, Roy Pérez, described the initiative as a “paltry reduction” and questioned the eligibility criteria for large families, where an income cap remains in place to qualify. For his part, the Cs spokesperson, José Carlos Martín, questioned the scope and budget of the initiative. “200,000 euros is a drop in the ocean, a mere grain of sand. Yet they are presenting it as a major milestone, within the largest budget in Mijas’ history”, he said.

The amendment to the IBI tax  by-law was passed in this first phase, with the PSOE abstaining and the government team and Ciudadanos voting in favour.

  • La modificación de la ordenanza fiscal del IBI salió adelante en esta primera fase con la abstención del PSOE y el voto favorable del equipo de gobierno y Ciudadanos.
