At least 64 people have died following a violent collision between a Renfe high-speed train and an Iryo train near Toledo on the morning of Wednesday 28th, shortly before 09:00. This has been confirmed by Castilla-La Mancha's Civil Protection service, which has also warned of the high number of injured as a result of the crash, around 179, according to national media reports. The central government fears there may be further casualties and points to “a human error at the Atocha control centre”, which caused a Renfe AVE train to hit an Iryo train that was stationary on the track.

The accident took place at kilometre marker 118, between the towns of Mora, Orgaz and Urda. Firefighters, Civil Protection personnel and medical teams are on the scene treating passengers from the derailed carriages, some of which have been completely destroyed. According to the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, the Iryo train was carrying 147 passengers, including a baby, while the AVE had 397 passengers on board. As a result of the accident, rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia have been suspended.

This tragic event has also led to the parallel suspension of numerous public and political events across the country.
