On Friday, the Junta de Andalucía's Infoca plan carried out a prescribed burn in the El Chaparral area, in the vicinity of Camino del Hipódromo, to reduce fuel load accumulation and strengthen fire prevention near homes. The operation, announced on Thursday by the Town Hall, provides continuity to preventive treatments in an area with a high recurrence of wildfires, and marks the third operation carried out this year.
The councillor for the Fire Brigade, Francisco Jerez (Vox), explained that the work focused on scrubland and brush: “The objective is to reduce the fuel load, which can be very significant in these areas. Once treated, these surfaces hinder the advance of a potential fire and facilitate the work of firefighting crews".

The operation involved around thirty Infoca specialists, along with fire-fighting vehicles and equipment, as well as the presence of environmental inspectors from the Regional Government of Andalusia. The Mijas Fire Department collaborated with the operation, with personnel present in the area to provide the necessary support during the intervention. Furthermore, the water tankers from the municipal Operational Services remained on standby to supply water should the need arise.

The schedule outlined by Infoca envisaged working across the same surface area treated in November 2025, located on private land, with the owners' agreement and in line with a burn plan approved specifically for this work. Jerez emphasised that “these operations require a prior study of the terrain and are carried out gradually, with a cordoned-off perimeter and personnel and resources ready to control the fire at all times".
Conditions
Wind and humidity are key factors both in starting the work and determining its scope, as the councillor pointed out: “Infoca specialists constantly assess conditions and adapt the operation to how they evolve. The safety of the professionals and nearby homes is always the priority”.

The operation forms part of the preventative work carried out by Infoca across peri-urban areas of Málaga province, where residential developments border forest land. “Prevention demands action before an emergency occurs. Reducing fuel load in these spaces helps us prepare the terrain and improve conditions to tackle a possible fire”, concluded Jerez
On Monday morning (26th), controlled burns resumed and, weather permitting, will continue in order to complete the work in the areas identified and assessed by Infoca. The Mijas Fire and Rescue Service will announce the specific dates so that residents are kept informed and are not alarmed by the sight of smoke or flames nearby.
