Mijas Town Hall considers the support it offers to the various social organisations providing services in the town to be “indisputable”. “Today [Friday 23rd]”, the council explained, “further proof of this has been provided”, with the formalisation of an agreement to transfer a municipal property to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
The agreement was signed by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), alongside the provincial president of the AECC, Juan Carlos Martín. Also in attendance were Mijas councillors Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), Lourdes Burgos (PP) and Juan José Torres Trella (PP); the head of the AECC in Mijas, Mari Carmen Gómez; and the organisation’s manager, Carmen Litrán. The signing took place at the La Cala Town Hall Branch, as the premises are located in this centre, specifically on Calle Antequera.
This is the first time the AECC has had its own premises in the municipality, an organisation that will be responsible for renovating and refurbishing the building. The premises cover an area of approximately 78 square metres, with an additional 46 square metres of terrace.

Recognition
“We are fortunate to have in Mijas a wide network of social organisations that are absolutely complementary to and essential for the public administration, as they reach places we often cannot. With this transfer to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, we want to go one step further and show our support for their work, which is recognised by all”, explained the mayoress.
For his part, the organisation’s provincial president highlighted Mijas Town Hall's commitment to social causes. “With local councils as committed as Mijas to the support and wellbeing of patients, it is easier to reach everyone who needs us. Thanks to these premises, we are one step closer to achieving an average survival rate of 70 per cent by 2030”, he said.

Key points
The transfer agreement was approved by the Local Governemnt Board on 26th September, an essential procedure given that Mijas holds 'Large Municipality' status. The period during which the organisation may use this municipal property is ten years, although, provided certain conditions and procedures are met, this period may be extended to up to thirty years.
According to the documentation, the premises must be used four days a week, and an annual report on activities carried out must be submitted to determine whether the objectives set out in the agreement are being met.
As regards the services to be provided, these will be health and social care services. The report submitted by the AECC states that psychological support, social care, wellbeing workshops and healthcare (physiotherapy, nutrition and speech therapy) will be provided.

Professionals
The premises will feature three consultation rooms staffed by professionals, including a psychologist, a social worker and a physiotherapist. These same spaces may be used by volunteers carrying out awareness, prevention or companion campaigns.
“Receiving the keys to these premises is a dream come true and the first goal I set myself when I took office as head of the branch in Mijas a year ago. Many thanks to the mayoress and the Town Hall for their dedication and support, which will enable us to expand the free services we provide to patients and their families”, concluded Gómez.
