The Local Security Board of Mijas Town Hall, meeting on Monday 19th in the plenary hall, agreed to offer two plots of land to the State so that it may assess the optimal location for a new Civil Guard headquarters in the municipality.
“We have a population of over 100,000 inhabitants and, therefore, the competent authority, the Ministry of the Interior, owes a debt to Mijas”, said the mayoress of Mijas Ana Mata (PP), who believes that “the development of much-needed infrastructure has not kept pace with the growth of the municipality, particularly when it comes to something as important as public safety. On many occasions, it is our Local Police, in coordination with the Civil Guard, that carry out duties which should fall to other security forces”. “Thanks to the good coordination between the Civil Guard and the Local Police, we have managed to reduce crime by 10 per cent in 2025, something neighbouring municipalities have not achieved. We would like to congratulate both the Civil Guard and the Local Police on the exceptional work they carry out”, said the councillor for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox).
These are two plots of land, one in La Cala (in the Lagar Martell area) and another in Las Lagunas (near Avenida de Andalucía). “The one in Las Lagunas still faces some planning obstacles, and given the public administration’s response to certain situations, we in the government team have decided to expand this offer and add a new site in La Cala, a plot situated between the two districts and with good transport links”, said Mata.
The meeting, chaired by the mayoress and Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, also served to introduce the new commander of the Civil Guard’s main post in Mijas, José Mulero, who attended alongside Lieutenant Alberto Reyes. Members of the Local Police, the National Police, the Government Sub-delegation in Málaga, political groups and the municipal Youth Delegation also took part.
More resources
Both the mayoress and the councillor for Local Police emphasised the need for the Civil Guard to have its own facilities in Mijas. “We have facilities in Fuengirola that are sub-standard and over 80 years old”, explained Cuevas Dawson, who added that “we have half the number of officers compared to Fuengirola, even though Mijas has a much larger area and population; this is not right, and it is something we have been calling for for three years. Furthermore, this places an additional financial burden on the Local Police, as we are covering duties that should fall to the state security forces”. “The current barracks, which, as well as being in another town, are obsolete in terms of meeting the demands of the Civil Guard, not only for Mijas but for the Costa del Sol as a whole”, added Mata.
The councillor responsible for Local Police is confident that the Civil Guard will be able to choose, as soon as possible, the location best suited to its needs for the construction of the new barracks. However, he emphasised that “Mijas is the third most populous municipality in the province of Málaga, having tripled its population over the last three decades and continuing to grow. For this reason, just as important as having modern and suitable facilities is for the Ministry of the Interior to finally reinforce the Civil Guard workforce once and for all, to guarantee the security our residents deserve”. “In short, what we are asking for is more officers, proper barracks, and greater access to the digital resources held by the Ministry of the Interior, because we want the highest level of security for the police in Mijas, and that means also having access to those databases so that they know who they are dealing with”.

Locations
Specifically, the Local Security Board has approved municipal plot 357 (Lagar Martell, La Cala extension) as an ideal site for the construction of a new headquarters due to its size, zoning status and road links.
The plot is zoned for community facilities and covers an area of 7,654.52 square metres, with a buildable area of 7,854 square metres. As for the plot in Las Lagunas, it is a site of a similar size next to the Diversidad roundabout, pending urban development.
Immigration Services
Alongside the future new Civil Guard headquarters, Mijas Town Hall proposes to assess the possibility of establishing, on this same plot, an Immigration and ID Issuing Office run by the National Police. This initiative would enable the council to meet the administrative demands associated with the municipality’s national and international population and would help to ease the pressure on the offices in Fuengirola and Marbella. “I will continue to strongly advocate for Mijas to have the infrastructure that other municipalities already have”, stated the mayoress of Mijas, who emphasised that “I have a duty to keep pressing the Ministry of the Interior to ensure that Mijas has the necessary infrastructure to guarantee the safety of its citizens”.
The site plan and the requirements programme must specify the layout of both facilities, their access points, the safety conditions, the functional autonomy of each service and the necessary provisions for future extensions. The proposed suitability is subject to urban planning, technical, safety and accessibility checks, as well as confirmation that the available capacity is sufficient to adequately cater for the intended uses.
Other issues
Furthermore, the meeting’s agenda covered other issues relevant to safety in the municipality, such as the renewal of the Viogen system, access to the SIGO Mobility system, and the planning of festive, cultural, sporting and leisure events and activities; and also a review of the report from the Youth Department regarding incidents of harassment, cyberbullying, online gambling addiction, and online gaming and betting.
