On Thursday 15th, a selection of items usually found in Age Care’s shop in El Zoco (Calahonda) left the shelves for a few hours to take to the runway at a charity fashion show hosted at its day centrein El Chaparral. The event was a sell-out success days in advance, with guests also enjoying light refreshments. Age Care supports around 900 older people, mostly English-speakers, “from Torremolinos to Marbella, Alhaurín and Coín, people who moved here years ago and are now elderly, alone, and often struggling to get by on their pension”, explained Natalia Tarr, who runs the Age Care charity shop.
“We host many events, and this fashion show is an annual fixture. Here, we get together on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to chat, play dominoes or enjoy a coffee. When someone needs extra support and doesn’t have the financial means, an assessment is carried out and Age Care steps in with funding for a carer”, said Rachael Makinson, a volunteer with the charity. Volunteers also accompany seniors to medical appointments, help with admin, and run Spanish lessons. For his part, the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo (PP), noted that “at the Town Hall, we are delighted with the work they do because, no matter how hard Social Services works, there are people we simply cannot reach. This association’s mission is precisely to bridge that gap for those who, often due to the language barrier, struggle to integrate”.
