Tourism and beach bars praise the role of golf in autumn tourism

Business owners highlight the opportunities presented by the arrival of golfers to keep the hospitality sector going outside the summer season

The councillor for Tourism at Mijas Town Hall, Francisco Jerez (Vox), held a meeting on Friday 9th with representatives of the town’s beach bars, led by the president of the Mijas Beach Bar Owners’ Association, Carlos Morales, to analyse the results of the summer season and the outlook for business during the autumn and winter. The meeting, held at the Royal Beach beach bar in Calahonda, forms part of the regular contacts the tourism department maintains with the various tourism sectors in the municipality.

Jerez explained that these meetings provide first-hand insight into the situation facing the establishments and the specific characteristics of each area along the coast. “Not all beach bars attract the same type of customer or operate in the same way. That is why we are keen to listen to the business owners, find out how their summer has gone and share with them the promotional initiatives we are preparing for the coming months”, said the councillor.

Domestic tourism

For his part, Morales shared with the councillor the sector’s views on the summer season, highlighting the importance of domestic tourism during August and the need to continue adapting to changing demand and rising costs. “Each area of the coast has its own specific characteristics and visitor profile. Domestic tourism has played an important role this summer and we are now entering a new phase in which the arrival of other types of tourists, such as golf enthusiasts, can help to sustain business at our establishments”, said the president of the beach bar association.

Golf

One of the issues discussed was the arrival of golf-related visitors during the autumn, a segment in which the Tourism Department has been carrying out international promotional activities. “It is work whose results are not immediate, but which is beginning to bear fruit. The fact that business owners are telling us they are noticing a greater presence of golfers is positive, because we are talking about visitors who also generate business for hotels, restaurants, taxis and other services in the municipality”, emphasised Jerez.

In this regard, Morales highlighted the opportunities this type of visitor offers to coastal establishments. “Golf tourists have significant spending power and tend to stay for several days. From September onwards, more golfers start to arrive and I believe this is an interesting opportunity for Mijas”, he said. Jerez pointed out that one of the objectives of the municipality’s tourism promotion is to encourage activity throughout the year. “In the past, when winter arrived, many hotels and beach bars would close. Today, we have establishments that remain open until the end of November, and some are even considering staying open throughout the winter. That is the path we wish to follow”, he added.

Collaboration

During the meeting, the importance of maintaining open communication between the Tourism Department and professionals in the sector was highlighted, in order to understand their needs and address the challenges of the coming months. Jerez emphasised that “direct contact with business owners allows us to gain a better understanding of the reality of each establishment and to tailor our initiatives to the characteristics of each area of the municipality”. In this regard, Morales welcomed these working meetings and the opportunity to directly convey the concerns and proposals of beach bar owners, with the shared aim of promoting tourism throughout the year.
