El Torreón restaurant in La Cala is preparing the eleventh edition of its Rice Week, an initiative that combines gastronomy, social commitment and recognition for those who contribute to the community’s wellbeing. The event will take place from 26th October to 1st November and will offer daily set menus for 35 euros. “Everyone will be able to enjoy the very best rice, because we have a chef who, together with the whole team, does his bit and puts his heart and soul into ensuring everything turns out perfectly”, said the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP).

During the presentation, the mayoress thanked the family who own the restaurant for their involvement and highlighted the commitment of the people and organisations working to meet the needs of their neighbours. Furthermore, the programme includes a tribute lunch in honour of Belén Guerra, president of the Santa Teresa de La Cala Parish Association, for her social work. “I am proud to receive this tribute, especially as it recognises the work we have been doing. I’m at the forefront, but without the team behind me, I wouldn’t be sitting here”, said Guerra.
For his part, Mario Gallardo, the restaurant owner, highlighted the responsibility the establishment takes on with this sort of activity. “We feel a social responsibility to organise this event. I would also like to mention that we will be open all year round, except for one week, as the whole team is going on a trip, because celebrating is also important”, he said. He also paid tribute to the legacy started by his father, Salvador Gallardo, eleven years ago, and emphasised his commitment to continuing this sort of initiative in La Cala.
Charity Day
The charity aspect of the event will have a key date on 29th October. On that day, proceeds will go to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), aiming to contribute to the care and support services provided to patients and their families.
The president of the AECC in Mijas, María del Carmen Gómez, expressed her gratitude for the restaurant’s involvement and the support of everyone taking part. “On 29th October, everyone who comes along will be doing their bit for the Spanish Association Against Cancer”, she explained, while highlighting the importance of offering support to people facing a cancer diagnosis, particularly during treatment. The association provides support in areas such as psychological care, physiotherapy and social services, alongside family support.

Menus
The culinary programme will feature a range of specialities, including seafood rice, surf and turf rice, oxtail rice and brothy seafood rice. The aim is to showcase fresh local produce and suppliers from Mijas and the surrounding area.
“What we want is to promote the produce we have here, using high-quality local produce and suppliers from the Mijas area”, said Isaac Montiel, head chef at El Torreón restaurant.
With this eleventh edition, El Torreón once again combines cuisine and charity in an event that seeks to showcase both local produce and the work of the people and organisations committed to La Cala de Mijas.
