La Cala de Mijas is preparing to celebrate its major festivities in honour of Santa Teresa, the patron saint of this area. Next week, her feast day will be celebrated with a procession on 15th October, followed by the traditional ‘verbena’ on Saturday 17th and the pilgrimage in Los Olivos Park on Sunday 18th October. These will be three action-packed days featuring religious events, live music, the open-air festival and the pilgrimage.

According to the parish priest of La Cala, Fernando Luque, “taking our patron saint out onto the streets is a way of saying that we still regard her as our protector and that we ask her to continue accompanying us in our daily lives as our patron saint, to remain present in our streets, homes and lives, and thus to bring her closer to the people”, he said.

Thursday 15th

The saint’s main day of celebration will be the 15th, a local public holiday. Mass in her honour will begin at 19:30, accompanied by the Villa de Mijas Choir, the floral offering and the presentation of the infants born this year. Following this, the procession will take place through the main streets of La Cala, featuring changes this year and lasting approximately one and a half. According to the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), “the Municipal Band will provide the musical accompaniment”. Bearers are needed to carry the image for both this procession and the pilgrimage.

The president of the Santa Teresa Parish Association, Belén Guerra, stated that “this year our aim is to bring her closer to the most central streets of La Cala, so we will avoid the boulevard. On leaving, instead of turning right, we’ll turn left onto Calle Estepona, then take Calle Casarabonela and Calle Nerja; we’ll pass by the Town Hall branch office and head down to El Torreón, before taking the traditional Holy Week streets: Manilva, Torremolinos and Casares. As a new feature, we are also including Calle Álora, which is too narrow for the Holy Week thrones to pass through, but we can”, she noted.

Saturday 17th

On Saturday 17th, the ‘verbena’ will begin at 13:00 in Los Olivos Park, where the parish group will set up a bar. A free dish of paella will be provided with every drink purchased. In the evening, at 19:00, the children’s festival king and queen will be chosen, and visitors will be able to enjoy performances by La Porrita, Alejados and Moni Kabana.

Sunday 18th

There will be a pilgrimage Mass at 11:00, after which the saint will be carried to Los Olivos Park, where the day of community celebrations will begin. According to councillor Silvia Marín (PP), the image will be accompanied “by the Las Lagunas Music Group. The route will depart from the parish church itself, via Calle Marbella, La Cala Boulevard, Avenida del Limonar and Avenida de Sierra Morena, until reaching Los Olivos Park”.

For his part, the councillor for Operational Services, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), highlighted “the great effort made by the Town Hall in preparing for these festivities”, citing as examples that “all the barbecues have been checked and repaired so they are all working on the day of the pilgrimage; the horse trough has also been renovated, the lighting has been updated, and the chapel area has been repainted”.
