From Monday, 5th October, Mijas is hosting the photographic exhibition ‘The Fury Within Me, Desolation’, a collection of images by photographer Vicenta Casañ that reflects the consequences of the DANA storm that struck Valencia on 29th October 2024. The exhibition, which was previously shown in Mijas in May at the Mijitas premises, is now on display at Mijas Dental Care, at Calle Rumanía 1, in La Hacienda de Mijas Golf residential area.
The exhibition features various photographs taken by Casañ in the days following the flood and conveys the mark of the devastation left by the storm. As the artist explains, the images depict the destruction suffered by her yoga school and aim to keep the memory of what happened alive, while also sending a message of hope. “May this tragedy serve to foster growth in love, respect and compassion. May this devastation be transformed into new opportunities for people and not be forgotten”, she states on the exhibition poster.

The initiative is sponsored by Soroptimist, an organisation that actively collaborated with the photographer in the reconstruction of her yoga studio, and by Mijas Dental Care, which is hosting the exhibition throughout October. As Daphne Theunissen, secretary of Soroptimist International, pointed out, “in this exhibition we do not see large photographs, but rather small ones, which reflect everything she lost in practically half an hour, while also showing all the grime left behind by the water on the walls and floor, which is very difficult to remove”.

For her part, dentist Giovanna Hurtado, owner of Mijas Dental Care, explained that “at our centre we strongly support art, science and women in all walks of life, and on this occasion we are once again joining forces with Soroptimist, as we also collaborated when they helped women in Cártama who lost everything, along with women in the villages around Valencia”.
The opening of the exhibition on Monday 5th was attended by the councillor for Foreigners in Mijas, Mario Bravo (PP), who praised this type of initiative: “The voluntary sector in Mijas is very active and very positive, and this particular initiative, focused on women, strikes us as very interesting; that is why we at the Town Hall try to support it in every way we can”, he stated.
