The Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office is hosting this collection of handicrafts until 30th October

The Tourist Office’s exhibition space is hosting two new collections from the Mijas Craft Association from Friday, 2nd October, until 30th October. They showcase the work produced in their workshops by local craftswomen Laura Benavides and Humildad Ríos.

Benavides, with her personal brand ‘Quejojoyas’, a name inspired by the early 1990s film ‘El robobo de la jojoya’, starring the comedy duo Martes y Trece, is exhibiting work made with polymer clay. “It is a representation of the work I do as an artisan; these are accessories made from this material, which is shaped and then baked in the oven. Here we find earrings and pendants, and as I love photography and think it has potential within my brand, I’ve brought along some photographs of the process and finished pieces”, explained Benavides.

The illustrator Humildad Ríos, whose workshop is on Avenida del Compás (s/n), has chosen to display work created on ceramics and plant fibres: “I have brought several samples so visitors can see the process from the very beginning until the ceramic is fired, and for plant fibres I have included several types, such as esparto paper, cellulose, wood and natural leaves, so visitors can see that illustration can be rendered on any surface”.

Through this initiative, which welcomes all Mijas craftspeople, the Tourism Department is demonstrating its support for the group and offering them the opportunity to open their workshops to the world. “With this initiative, we want to showcase Mijas craftsmanship at the Tourist Office; it provides broader international exposure that will help position Mijas as a town with its own distinct identity when it comes to artisan craft in Andalusia, that is something we need to highlight".

The craftswomen also thank Tourism Mijas for this collaboration, as it gives visibility to their projects. “This is an important showcase because a lot of people pass through here. A couple of years ago, when I exhibited, a lot of people contacted me because they wanted to buy a piece”, said Benavides.

In this respect, Ríos stated that previously, when she presented other works made with resin, “it was quite well received, many people asked me about them, and I was very happy with the publicity it received".

The exhibition can be visited until 30th October, Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 15:00.
