An important day for Mijas, especially for Las Lagunas. This is how the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), described the official opening of the new car park in the Los Santos neighbourhood, which took place on Friday 2nd October in the presence of members of government team and residents of this area of Las Lagunas.
The mayoress explained that this facility, valued at 15.7 million euros and with 272 spaces, stems from the need to alleviate the daily parking problems faced by residents and visitors in the area. It is a well-established urban area, very popular within the town. For this reason, the car park offers spaces for residents, allocated via a public draw, as well as spaces open to the public.
“Since we took office at the local council, we have closely monitored the progress of this project through the Infrastructure Department and ensured that it was moving in the direction we required. That is why we have made regular site visits. We have come here, supervised the work, spoken to those in charge of the project and checked on the ground how each phase was progressing”, said Mata.

Features of the facility
As for the infrastructure’s features, it is worth noting that the building has four underground levels housing the 272 parking spaces, including bays for people with disabilities and for electric vehicles. Of the total, 200 are reserved for residents, while the remainder are open to the public.
Furthermore, thanks to a reorganisation of the spaces proposed by the government team, it has been possible to secure 38 more spaces than originally planned. The mayoress pointed out that this represents “a very significant improvement for Las Lagunas”.
The Los Santos car park occupies almost the entire underground area of the squares La Cala, Mijas and Los Olivos, all of which are connected via Calle San Matías. The project also includes a vehicle entrance ramp to the car park from Calle San Jorge, next to the junction with Plaza de La Cala, and a vehicle exit ramp from the car park at Plaza de Mijas. The two ramps are situated on the central traffic island.

In addition, there are two pedestrian access points from the outside, equipped with stairs and a lift, complying with regulations on the removal of architectural barriers and guaranteeing accessibility.
“We will continue to work to ensure our town has the infrastructure it needs, so that every investment has a real impact on people’s lives and so that every project we launch has a single objective: to make Mijas a better place to live”, concluded the mayoress, emphasising that the Los Santos car park represents another step towards this goal.

Support for local residents
Both the mayoress of Mijas and the councillor for Works and Infrastructure at Mijas Town Hall, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), addressed the residents present at the event, acknowledging the patience they had shown throughout the construction work and the inconvenience these works may have caused them. “We know that some homes have suffered damage, but we would like to reassure residents that there is no need to worry, because both the comopany and the municipal technicians are visiting each resident individually to try to resolve the problems identified in their homes, and we will be there to ensure this matter is resolved as soon as possible”, said Torres Trella.

Proximity to the health centre
For his part, the deputy mayor of Las Lagunas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), highlighted the proximity of this new car park to the Las Lagunas Health Centre, “just a few minutes" walk away, so we encourage all residents to leave their vehicles in this car park; if it’s just for a quick errand, they won’t have to pay anything, and if they stay for more than an hour, they’ll only have to pay one euro for eight hours”, he noted.
Similarly, Belmonte noted that “in this neighbourhood we have a bank, tobacconists, bars and restaurants, and many shops which, due to the parking problem, were unable to compete with other parts of the municipality, but now this issue has been resolved and we’re confident that the new car park will also boost the local economy”.
