The Mijas Town Hall has begun clearing and cleaning streams and watercourses across the municipality ahead of autumn and the risk of heavy rainfall.

The work, coordinated by the Operational Services and Beaches departments, “will continue until late November or early December”, as explained by the councillor responsible for these areas, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP).

Initial work has focused on the mouths of the streams, with tasks already completed on the La Cala and Algaida streams. Work has also been carried out at the water outlet on Luna Beach, next to the beach bar, as well as around the Moro stream, among other locations. Within the municipality, crews “are working in areas such as Las Alberquillas, clearing streams and watercourses to facilitate water drainage during periods of rain,” noted Gómez Teruel.

The Town Hall explained that it “is maintaining coordination with Acosol to clean street drains and sewer manholes.” These measures come in addition to clearing work already carried out on several occasions along the María Barranco stream.

Although the councillor insists that the municipality currently has “no problem spots” thanks to the preventative cleaning, he does acknowledge that one area requires special preparation during heavy rain. This is Camino de Coín, where, as Gómez Teruel explained, the presence of combined stormwater and sewage pipes in certain sections causes water to pool when the watercourse reaches capacity: “We hope that once the water collector and stormwater retention basin are completed and brought into operation, we can provide a definitive solution to the waterlogging that occurs in Las Lagunas", he said.

The Town Hall is also appealing to residents to avoid behaviour that could hinder water drainage or cause problems in the sewerage system. Gómez Teruel asked people “not to throw waste into streams” and placed particular emphasis on the need “not to flush wipes, sanitary towels or other products down the toilet that could end up causing blockages in the network”.

The aim of these measures is to keep watercourses clear and facilitate water runoff in the event of heavy rain over the coming months.
