August draws to a close with a packed agenda of activities across the municipality’s three main town centres, many of which are dedicated to the patron saint, the Virgen de La Peña, as her feast day approaches. The most important event will be the transfer of the image on Saturday, from her chapel to the parish church of La Inmaculada, but further religious, cultural and sporting events have been planned in honour of the Virgen and the fair that will soon be held in her name.

Firstly, this Friday will see the offering of tuberoses to the Virgen de la Peña to adorn the throne for the image's transfer. Anyone wishing to contribute flowers can head to the Ermita del Compás, which will remain open from 09:30 to 20:30.

On Saturday, the traditional procession of the Virgen de la Peña will take place; at 21:30, she will set off from the Ermita del Compás, carried on the shoulders of officers from the Mijas Local Police. The procession will follow Avenida del Compás, Calle Los Caños, through the Plaza de la Libertad and the Plaza de la Constitución, and along Cuesta de la Villa, until it reaches La Muralla. And on Sunday, the Mijas Municipal Band will perform its equally traditional ‘Concierto Pórtico de Feria’ in Plaza de la Constitución, starting at 20:00. The band’s repertoire will include lively and popular tunes, all to remind us that the 2026 Mijas Fair is just round the corner.

Incidentally, on the same day, though in the morning, the 46th Mijas Fair Race will take place, the longest-running sporting event in Mijas, bringing together athletics enthusiasts and runners from the under-7 category right up to the seniors. The race will start at 10:00 with routes of varying distances through the historic centre, depending on age. Registration for this sporting event is now closed.

 

Music and fun in La Cala

La Cala also offers leisure options this weekend. This Friday, from 20:00, Plaza del Torreón will host the second edition of the ‘Under Mijas Fest’, featuring performances by Jairo Merino, Bassy, Hache G-Z, Adri O, Type, Deke and Yulia, among other local artists. This initiative, organised by the Culture Department and the María Zambrano Neighbourhood Association, will also have a charitable focus, as the proceeds from the charity bar will go to four organisations: Sembrando Sonrisas, Suspiros de Cuatro Patas, El Faro de la Escucha and Adimi.

And a little earlier, at 19:30, one of the final events of Youth Week will begin, organised by the Mijas Youth Department and the La Cala Youth Association. This is a summer send-off party, which will take place on La Cala Boulevard (Carrefour car park) featuring music and entertainment for residents and visitors of all ages.

Horse-riding trail and flamenco

On Saturday, there will also be two further events of interest. At 20:30, the 14th Full Moon Horse-Riding Trail will begin, organized by Mijas Town Hall’s Livestock Department and the Peña Caballista de Mijas. Participants will set off from El Esparragal Park and follow the river trail, including several refreshment stops. According to the organisers, this activity is suitable for all levels.

And at 21:30, in La Cala, the Peña Flamenca del Sur will be filled with fine flamenco singing featuring the voices of Juan A. Pérez, Manuel Heredia ‘El Yunque’, María Espinosa and Carmen Jiménez, with free entry until capacity is reached.

The Champions Burger Mijas

There are still plenty of days left to visit the Las Lagunas fairground, which is hosting The Champions Burger Mijas 2026 until 6th September. Seventeen establishments are taking part, competing to create the best burger in Spain, including one with a Mijas stamp: Dak Burger, offering ‘The One’. You can enjoy this event from Monday to Thursday, from 18:00 to 00:00, and from Friday to Sunday, from 12:00 to midnight. For a sweet treat, head to The Champions Cheesecake, a dessert area also located on the fairground where cheesecake takes centre stage.

Solidarity and organic market

We round off the weekend’s agenda in La Cala, with two options for Saturday and Sunday mornings. As on every last Saturday of the month, the square outside the Town Hall Branch Office welcomes various local associations, who set up stalls selling food and a variety of items to raise funds, from 11:00 to 14:00. And to round off the month, the La Cala boulevard brings together traders selling fruit, vegetables, olive oil and other natural products at the organic market, which will be open from 09:00 to 13:30.
