  • El protagonismo de la agenda de ocio esta semana se lo lleva The Champions Burger. |

The Virgen de la Peña will receive the verses and praises of local residents and the faithful on Poetry Afternoon

This Thursday 20th, The Champions Burger returns to Mijas, an event that last year left us with the image of the Las Lagunas fairground brimming with people every single day. Up to 187,000 people enjoyed the Smash Edition; and this summer, around 200,000, according to organisers' estimates, will have the opportunity to score a real touchdown of flavours at the Las Lagunas fairground, which will be transformed into an NFL stadium to welcome the 17 teams competing in the contest.

The rival to beat in this burger Super Bowl will be Nolito’s ‘Diamante Azul’, which is fielding a mouth-watering line-up: blue brioche bun with diamond dust and rose gold, aged smash beef, American-style ribs, bacon jam, cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, smoked mayonnaise and Emmy sauce.

Facing them will be the Mijas-based restaurant Dak Burger, last year’s runner-up in Mijas, which with its ‘The One’ will try to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy with a bacon bun with a sprinkling of Parmesan, Black Angus ribeye steak, matured red cheddar, pulled cheese and pork, barbecue sauce, crispy cheddar, creamy bacon cheese and New York sauce.

As a novelty this year, the cheesecake competition is introduced, named, of course, The Champions Cheesecake.

The event is open from Monday to Thursday from 18:00 to midnight, and during the weekend from 12:00 to midnight.

Birra & Art

The third edition of the ‘Birra & Art’ festival begins, which will be held in La Cala de Mijas from 20th to 23rd August. Over the weekend, attendees can enjoy a wide selection of craft beers, good gastronomy and live music. The event will run from 19:00 to 01:00. The event will be held from 19:00 to 01:00. This is a travelling event that was created with the intention of raising the profile of small beer producers. The event is completed with a wide variety of gastronomic products, as stalls selling German sausages, grills, Mexican and Latin food will be set up in the car park on La Cala Boulevard. The festival will be animated by local music groups.

Poetry Afternoon

This Sunday 23rd August, a new edition, and that makes fifteen, of the ‘Poetry Afternoon’ in honour of the Patron Saint of Mijas will be held in El Compás, next to the chapel of the Virgen de la Peña. The event will begin at 20:30 and is an open competition for all those who wish to dedicate their words to the Virgin, so interested parties can confirm their participation by emailing cultura@mijas.es or at the Casa Museo.

In previous editions, around twenty poems loaded with feeling, gratitude, faith and joy were read out, and it is expected that this year will follow the same line.

Organic market

This Sunday, the organic market arrives at La Cala Boulevard, located opposite the branch office. Stalls selling fruit, vegetables and organic produce, mainly from the Guadalhorce Valley, will be found there. The market can be visited from 09:00 to 13:30.

Add rhythm

Senior citizens in the municipality will be able to attend the La Cala Senior Citizens' Centre this Sunday 23rd August to take part in the ‘Add rhythm to your life’ activity. The activity does not require prior registration and will be held on alternate Sundays from 19:30 to 22:00.

Exhibitions

The boulevard in La Cala de Mijas hosts the exhibition ‘400 Years of History of the Consular Corps in Málaga 1641-2026’, where visitors will find posters with information on the history of 48 consulates since their creation in the province of Málaga. The exhibition is outdoors and will remain until September.

La Cala

Meanwhile, the artist Daaf Zwiers is exhibiting a collection of three-dimensional works made from aluminium at the La Cala de Mijas Cultural Centre. Using an innovative technique, a material usually associated with industry takes centre stage in an original artistic proposal, with which Zwiers manages to create effects of depth, light and texture that transform each piece depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The exhibition brings together portraits of renowned figures such as Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí or Marilyn Monroe, as well as landscapes and representations of the animal world. It is the first time that Daaf Zwiers presents this technique in Mijas, where metal takes on a leading role thanks to its textures and the unique colours it offers. The exhibition can be visited until 7th September at the La Cala de Mijas Cultural Centre, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, with free entry.

Las Lagunas

The exhibition ‘Cross-stitch Art: Threads that Tell Stories’ is composed of 21 large-format works, all created by Paqui Gómez over these years. It is on display at the Las Lagunas Cultural Centre. This resident of Las Lagunas has gathered part of a collection that until now remained at her home. Among them we can find ‘Las Meninas’, ‘Charles V’, ‘The Flight into Egypt’ or ‘Children Eating Cherries’. The exhibition can be visited until 14th September at the Las Lagunas Cultural Centre. Entry is free and all you need is a desire to discover, learn and feel.

Mijas Pueblo

Ana Ordóñez, known artistically as Azz House, presented a new exhibition in Mijas Pueblo composed of 14 works in which the figure of the woman becomes an essential element of her inspiration. At just 28 years old, this self-taught artist from Las Lagunas felt from a young age the need to express her feelings through painting. However, her professional career in the art world began in 2024. Since then... For Azz House, women represent “vulnerability and strength at the same time”, a duality reflected in much of her work. The exhibition brings together 14 pieces that also convey the meaning behind her own artistic signature, reflecting an internal struggle between society’s expectations and personal goals. All art lovers, as well as those wishing to enjoy an afternoon surrounded by art and creativity, can visit the exhibition at the Casa Museo in Mijas Pueblo until 14th September.

Miró

Since 10th August, the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC Mijas) has been hosting a temporary exhibition dedicated to the surrealist painter Joan Miró. The exhibition brings together 27 works that allow locals and visitors alike to enjoy the Catalan artist’s characteristic artistic universe. It can be visited until 12th November. Miró remains highly relevant thanks to his own artistic language, based on simple figures, intense colours and a great capacity for creative freedom. The works on display come from private collections in the Belgian city of Diest. The exhibition will remain open to the public until 12th November, although a possible extension is not ruled out if the response from visitors is positive. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 14:00, at the Mijas Contemporary Art Centre, located in the town’s historic centre.
