The events in honour of Mijas’ patron saint set the agenda for this weekend in the municipality. The 13th opening address in honour of the Virgen of La Peña will take place next Sunday 16 August and will be delivered by Magdalena Godoy. During the same event, the poster announcing the procession and the religious ceremonies in honour of the patron saint will be unveiled; this year’s poster was created by Rafael Muñoz. The event will take place at the El Compás Chapel from 20:30, when the honorary members of the brotherhood, the Mijas Local Police, recognised as the 2025 proclaimers, will hand over the baton to the new deliverer of the opening address.
Barrio Santana street party
Over the coming days, Mijas Pueblo will be the setting for various events and activities in addition to the opening address in honour of the Perpetual Mayoress of Mijas, such as the traditional Barrio Santana street party, which begins today (the 13th) and will run until Saturday 15 August.
If you would like to enjoy the neighbourhood festivities, make a note: on Friday 14th, Plaza de los Siete Caños will host a paella for residents and visitors from 14:00. The festivities will continue in the evening with a performance by Reme Fernández’s dance group at 21:30; the Progress urban dance show at 22:30; and, to round off the day, a performance by the band Jam Session from 23:00.
On Saturday, the festivities will continue with a ribbon race and table tennis at 11:00. For lunch, locals and tourists alike will be able to enjoy some delicious sardines from 14:00, and at 23:00, to bring the festivities to a close, Pesadj’s will perform with Guateque 4.0.
As every year, the street party, held in honour of Our Lady of Los Remedios, will also feature a Mass in honour of the Virgin at her chapel. Following the service, the image will be carried in procession through the streets of El Barrio, accompanied by the Mijas Music Band.
Art and photography
On the artistic front, the town will host the opening of Francisca Gómez Nadales’ cross-stitch exhibition on Friday 14th at the Cultura Centre in Las Lagunas. The exhibition will open to the public at 19:00 and can be visited until 14 September. Also running until 14 September is the painting exhibition by the artist Azz House at the Folk Museum in Mijas Pueblo.
The ‘Miró’ exhibition, organised by the Remedios Medina Foundation, can be viewed at CAC Mijas until 12 November, while the painting exhibition by Daaf Zwiers will be open to the public at the La Cala Cultural Centre until 7 September.
Meanwhile, the group photography exhibition ‘Profesiones’, by Nuevo Enfoque Mijas, remains open to visitors, with free admission, at the headquarters of the Nuevo Enfoque Association (El Coto estate, Los Olivos residential complex, phase I, unit 25).
Other plans and activities
If you’re still not convinced by all that Mijas has to offer, the weekend also brings other options such as the ‘Flamenco Mijas’ programme, which takes place every Saturday from 12:00 in the Plaza de la Constitución.
Meanwhile, the Mijas Town Hall's ‘Territorio Juventud’ initiative continues to organise water-based activities at El Torreón beach every Friday and Saturday from 17:00 to 20:00. And to round off the weekend’s plans, the municipal active participation centres and senior centres continue to host dance evenings for seniors. The Mijas Pueblo Active Participation Centre hosts these events on alternate Sundays, from 19:00 to 21:30. The next one will be on 16 August. The Las Lagunas Active Participation Centre holds its dances on Fridays, from 20:00 to 22:30, while the La Cala Senior Citizens’ Centre, like the one in Mijas Pueblo, hosts them on alternate Sundays, from 19:30 to 22:00. In this case, the next one will take place on 23 August.
