This weekend, Mijas will be brimming with rhythm, colour and flavour, with a packed programme of events to enjoy the summer. The star attraction will be the second edition of the Habana Vieja Fest, an event which, until Sunday, will transform Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo into a genuine slice of Cuba.

Every afternoon, from 18:00, locals and visitors alike will be able to immerse themselves in the essence of Havana with a carefully crafted atmosphere, live music, dance performances, traditional Cuban cuisine and a journey through the island’s most iconic sounds. In addition, the festival will feature DJ sets to keep the festive atmosphere going and ensure the square buzzes with energy throughout the weekend.

With this event as the main highlight, Mijas offers the perfect weekend to get out and about, discover new activities and enjoy the very best leisure options. Below, we outline everything you cannot miss over the coming days.

Folklore and flamenco

Saturday brings another of the weekend’s major events. Plaza del Torreón in La Cala de Mijas will host the 10th International Folklore Festival, which will begin with a parade at 21:00 and continue with performances from 21:30, with free admission.

And that same evening, also in La Cala, the Peña Flamenca del Sur will welcome Silvia Porra 'La Porrita', who will perform at 21:30, with free admission.

Street parties in La Loma and El Juncal

On Saturday evening, the residents of La Loma will celebrate their traditional street party ('verbena'), which will take place from 21:00 at their headquarters on Avenida La Loma, featuring a live performance by Miguel Botana, raffle draws and numerous surprises.

Also on Saturday, in Las Lagunas, the El Juncal street party, in the neighbourhood of the same name, will offer children’s games, a sardine barbecue ('sardinada') from 19:30, the Miss and Mister contest, performances by Enrique Heredia and Moni Kabana, as well as a tribute to Manuel Marín. The festivities will continue on Sunday, with children’s games, a paella from 14:00, a public recognition for local residents at 20:00, a performance by the Santiago Choir and a DJ set by DJ Ertitipier, bringing the celebrations to a close.

 

Exhibition

If you prefer a quieter, more cultural outing, do not miss the opening of the Azz House painting exhibition this Friday at the Casa Museo in Mijas Pueblo, which opens its doors at 18:00 and can be visited until 14 September.
