Mijas set for three days packed with events for all ages, featuring the environment, youth, flamenco, and art

Mijas is preparing to bid farewell to July in style. The municipality invites everyone to enjoy a weekend packed with activities spread across Mijas Pueblo, La Cala, and various locations to welcome August in true summer fashion.

The events kick off this Friday, 31st July, with the ‘Rhythm & Groove’ musical and gastronomic evening, featuring New York singer Suzette Moncrief as the main attraction. The event starts at 19:00 at the La Cala Resort Clubhouse. For further information and bookings, visit lacala.com.

Environmental awareness

One of the highlights will be ‘Territorio Azul’, the municipal campaign to raise awareness about recycling and marine protection, taking place this Saturday, 1st August, at El Torreón beach in La Cala from 16:00 to 19:00. The initiative aims to engage residents and visitors in caring for the coastline through a combination of environmental education and leisure.

Registered residents who show their ID card (DNI) and hand in 30 plastic bottle tops will receive two tickets for AquaMijas, a way of rewarding community cooperation and highlighting the importance of reducing waste that ends up on beaches and in oceans.

Territorio Juventud

Territorio Juventud will also continue over the weekend. Aimed at young people and also held at El Torreón beach, the programme will continue offering fun and water sports throughout August on Fridays and Saturdays from 17:00 to 20:00, with activities such as paddle surfing and kayaking. Registration is free and opens every Wednesday from 10:00 via the website experiencias.es.

Other plans

Flamenco will also play a key role in the Mijas leisure agenda. On Saturday, from 12:00, Plaza de la Constitución will once again host Flamenco Mijas, a free event bringing flamenco singing and dancing to locals and tourists right in the heart of the historic town centre.

Dancing will be another option this weekend. The Las Lagunas Active Participation Centre holds its sessions on Fridays, from 20:00 to 22:30, while on Sunday, 2nd August, it will be the turn of the Mijas Pueblo Active Participation Centre, from 19:00 to 21:30. At the La Cala Senior Citizens’ Centre, the next dance session will take place on Sunday 9th August.

Art and photography

The cultural programme is rounded off with several exhibitions. At the Mijas Pueblo Folk Museum, the exhibition from the 17th Enfoca Mijas Photography Marathon, featuring a selection of images taken during the event, can be viewed until 3rd August.

Meanwhile, the La Cala Cultural Centre is hosting an exhibition of paintings by the artist Daaf Zwiers until 7th September, while the Mijas Centre for Contemporary Art is running the ‘Miró’ exhibition, organised by the Remedios Medina Foundation, open until the 12th of November.

In addition to these, there is the joint photography exhibition ‘Profesiones’, organised by Nuevo Enfoque Mijas. The exhibition can be visited free of charge at the association’s premises, located in the El Coto development, within the Los Olivos complex, Phase I, Premises 25.
